NEWS FLASH Polaris Buys Indian Motorcycle Company

Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) today announced the acquisition of Indian Motorcycles. The business was acquired from Indian Motorcycle Limited (“IML”), a company advised by Stellican Limited and Novator Partners LLP, U.K. Private Equity firms. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“We are excited to be part of the revitalization of a quintessentially American brand,” said Scott Wine, CEO of Polaris Industries Inc. “Indian built America’s first motorcycle. With our technology and vision, we are confident we will deliver the classic Indian motorcycle, enhanced by the quality and performance for which Polaris and Victory are known.”

With this acquisition, Polaris adds one of motorcycling’s legendary brands to its strong stable of Victory cruiser and touring bikes. Indian will operate as an autonomous business unit, building upon the potent combination of Polaris’ engineering acumen and innovative technology with Indian’s premium brand, iconic design and rich American heritage.

“We are delighted to have reached an agreement with Polaris. Polaris will utilize its well-known strengths in engineering, manufacturing, and distribution to complete the mission we undertook upon re-launching the brand in 2006: harness the enormous potential of the Indian brand,” said Stephen Julius, chairman of Indian and managing director of Stellican. “Polaris is the most logical owner of Indian Motorcycle. Indian’s heritage brand will allow Polaris to aggressively compete across an expanded spectrum of the motorcycle market.”

Novator Partners LLP is a London based alternative investment firm founded and led by the investor Mr. Thor Bjorgolfsson. An avid motorcycle enthusiast, Mr. Bjorgolfsson said “After a troubled past, our goal was to bring the legendary Indian bikes back on the roads. The initial phase of that project is done and now our great partners at Polaris will carry on the work to realize the full potential of this classic American brand.”

    As with many commenter’s on this page, I sincerely hope that the Indian brand can come back strong and ever lasting. For it is an American Breed and one that deserves to be recognized and respected, Polaris is a great choice to bring alive the heritage and beauty of the Indian Motorcycles. Polaris has the engineers, the skilled workers and the finance. Just maybe, just maybe this will be a new beginning for not only the Indian brand but for America, we must wake-up from the nightmare and remember our past and the words that made us independent. Like hard work, determination and creativity, not entitlements, the same words that built the Indian Motorcycles, are part of our nation history. Glad the Indian is coming back, stronger then ever, just wish I was younger. God Bless the Constitution.

    thank u polaris for buying the first American motocycle i have a 1942 sportscout bike indian motocycle engine wuz a 42deg the new motor is like a harley motor which is 45deg im hope u guys come up with some thing new not a 110 year old thing

  3. I own a several Indian motorcycles including a 2003. I am impressed with my bike.

    I am sure the Indian will only become a more popular in years to come. I know the price tag is steep but it will set it apart from everything else.

  4. Great news……..The only real viable option and super smart move by Polaris to revitalize and preserve this famous brand. If the engines are anything like their 106 cube Victory motors, they’ll no doubt be a great success story. Hope they move the brand in that direction instead of hanging on to those tired old push rod pumpin designs. A great 1,2 puch. Victory and Indian, can’t wait. Smart move Polaris!!!! An Indian that will perform as well as it looks is coming soon.

  7. Who suggested they are moving production to Mexico? We heard they are likely to move the Indian operation to the Spirit Lake MN facilities.

    im guessing polaris will move indian to mexico to be built now? not a fan of this at all. they already have their own bike. keep to yourselves. whats next, suzuki’s gonna buy harley? polaris=Pull Of Lake And Repair In Summer. i have snowmobiles and polaris is by FAR the worst sled out there. engineering blob. wheelers the same, weak and tinny. don’t even wanna see what happens with this bike thing. b.s. my indian might be forsale now?

  9. Why not build real Indian motorcycles ? That is what people want ,not Harley Clones .Real Indian motors are available new from Kiwi Indian ,and they look better and perform better than any of these new non Indian motors even if they bear the name Indian . Also real Indian motor cycles hold their value .A slightly updated ,not totally revamped 1944 or 1947 frame and wheels would be perfect ,It handles much better and is hundreds of pounds lighter and much lower to the road in seat height than these Harley Clones .

  11. According to the Polaris management today, the Indian manufacturing will be moved to the Spirit Lake Victory facilities in the next few months. They also hinted that the Indian motorcycles will continue to focus on the Indian heritage and style and be “distinctly different” from the existing Victory motorcycles.

  12. We have been impressed with how Polaris has built the Victory brand of motorcycles and hope they can do as well with the Indian name too. Time will tell.

    What’s next? Will Polaris buy up the tooling and rights to the short-lived Excelsior brand?
    Will Polaris merge the engine design into one or maintain two separate engines with two separate parts and labor requirements?
    I am glad Polaris made this move. They are a stable, well-run outfit. This is probably the best chance for the Indian brand to survive.
