According to a local LA are news service;

Two people were killed today in the midst of a popular fundraiser that attracts hundreds of motorcycle riders to a group run up the Golden State (5) Freeway. A man and a woman were pronounced dead by L.A. city paramedics as hundreds of motorcyclists stood on the freeway, unsure of what to do, according to one witness.

The wreck occurred as motorcyclists crowded the northbound freeway on the 28th annual “Love Ride,” a charity fundraiser that snakes from a Glendale Harley-Davidson to a concert and barbecue at Castaic Lake, about 20 miles away. The crash happened just past the interchange where the northbound 5 merges with the northbound Hollywood (170) Freeway, a location where truck traffic enters the 5 from the left.

A man and a woman were pronounced dead by L.A. city paramedics as hundreds of motorcyclists stood on the freeway, unsure of what to do, according to one witness.

“Traffic had already slowed from a previous accident (ahead) and the motorcyclist and his passenger were moving between the number three and four lanes when the motorcyclist somehow got tangled up with the big rig,” said California Highway Patrol Officer Christian Cracraft. “The motorcyclist was run over by the trailer.”

Cracraft said the motorcyclist and his passenger were both approximately 40 years old.

A wreck was reported at 10:39 a.m. on the northbound 5 Freeway at Branford Street, and arriving firefighters said they had three motorcyclists there with mild to moderate injuries. The fatalities were reported at about 11:09, and they may have occurred in the backup, CHP officers said.

Jay Leno and Peter Fonda are this year’s grand marshals.

  1. Tony Caruso says:

    Jay Leno ironically announced before the ride started that he wanted to see someone go down on the ride. It has been too safe and there needed to be some a*&&()e out there to go down. Bad timing? I don’t think that is something to joke about. Too bad. My grandson and I were passing the accident as the CHP as performingn CPR to the woman. I did not see any “Bikers” just standing around doing nothing.
    Our deepest sympathy to the riders’ famalies,…….

  2. Wiley Dodd says:

    California is the only state that allows Motorcyclists to split lanes. It always seemed to me, the most dangerous thing you can do on a freeway.

  3. My heart goes out to the families. It’s a shame we can’t enjoy a nice ride with our friends and family without something sad happening. And a charity ride at that. We can only be so careful. My Deepest Sympathy.
