Oh, what has Buzz gotten himself into now? Apparently our fearless leader at American Iron is going to strap on his gear, hop aboard a 1915 Harley-Davidson, and duel it out with the likes of Billy Lane, Jay Allen, Rick Petko and others on the paved, banked, half-mile oval of New Smyrna Speedway.
The event in question is called “Sons of Speed,” a turn-of-the-century boardtrack-style race featuring early 20th century motorcycles. The affair is the brainchild of Lane who wanted to bring back the “wide-open, full-throttle, thrilling style of motorcycle racing” of yesteryear to modern audiences. The event will take place Saturday, October 15, during Daytona Beach’s Biketoberfest. The inaugural event was supposed to take place during the 75th anniversary of Daytona Beach Bike Week but was postponed, Lane stating in a press release “We have really high standards, and we worried about meeting them under the time constraints we faced. There has been so much enthusiasm from potential sponsors, fans and participants–we have to get it right.”
The “Sons of Speed” races will feature “nine riders in several different heats. Winners of the heats will advance to a championship round. Each racer will sit astride identical hand-built racing chassis holding pre-1925 1000cc American V-Twin engines, and most racers will customize their machines by fabricating handlebars, exhaust, fenders, foot pegs and fuel/oil tanks.”
Kanter added “Sounds like at least three of the teens racebikes are about ready for some track testing in the next couple of weeks. We will be racing with teens engines, magneto ignitions, rigid frames, no transmissions, no brakes and no clutches. I look forward to this fun in October. I will be competing on a 1915 Harley twin. I know Billy is open to a few more event sponsors if you are looking for a high profile motorcycle event to support.”
