AIM Contributor Alfonse Palaima Co-Authors Adventure Book ‘Journey to the End of the World’

Granted, our friend, photographer, and frequent contributor Alfonse Palaima might not have completed his “Journey to the End of the World” on a Harley-Davidson, but anybody who loves motorcycles and has a penchant for adventure can appreciate this book. Fonzie, as he’s affectionately known by in industry circles, has shot many features for American Iron in the past and the new book book is filled with his wonderful photographs. Journey to the End of the World from Octane Press

In the fall of 2016, 15 seasoned adventure motorcyclists set off on an untested route to the edge of South America. The idea behind Expedition 65, as cooked up by RawHyde head honcho Jim Hyde, was to travel across 65 degrees of latitude along the Andes Mountains from Cartagena, Colombia to Ushuaia, Argentina. Along the way, the E65 group encounters many of South America’s iconic locations, from the World’s Most Dangerous Road to the legendary Salar de Uyuni (the world’s largest salt flat), negotiating single- and double-track trails across the soaring peaks of the Andes as well as the knee-deep mud paths of the Amazon basin. The duo also record countless death-defying moments, a few fistfights, major “pucker-factor” scenarios, scores of mechanical meltdowns, and finally, the crossing over the Straits of Magellan onto Tierra del Fuego. After nailing the paint on last year’s Rock, Rumble & Rebellion bagger, Gilby’s Street Department got the call once again from the Sturgis Buffalo Chip and Kuryakyn to paint this year’s bike. Doesn’t hurt that your company does world-class work and completed last year’s project ahead of schedule.

“We always have a deadline and I think that’s why they went with us again because last year we were ahead of the deadline and got done early. This year, the same thing, we had it done ahead of time,” said Todd “Gilby” Gilbertson.

With all of the insane motorcycle racing going on at The Chip this summer, from Super Hooligan dirt trackers to street drags to supermoto through the campground to an American Flat Track TT race in the amphitheater, Woody and the gang wanted a bike that symbolizes its impending “Moto Stampede.”

“They wanted to have a racier theme so they went with just straight lines so it had a race feel to it. I think that’s because of all the flat track racing that’s going on right now, that’s kind of a big thing,” said Gilby.

Kuryakyn and The Buffalo Chip collaborated on the paint scheme, picked the colors, then gave Gilby’s a drawing.

“I just followed what they wanted, the colors, the stripes, the matte finish and all that, it was all on paper. All I had to do was follow their directions.”

But don’t let Gilby’s downplay their role. It’s a labor intensive, multi-step process, from base coat to clear coat to satin finish. And executing somebody else’s vision on paper doesn’t directly translate to a three-dimensional medium.

“The lines match up real well so it looks real simple but when you do layout the paint scheme, just as a painter, it’s way more complex than what it looks. It’s almost like drawing a perfect circle or a perfect straight line. Both of them are pretty hard to do and we have tons of straight lines on that one, ya know?

“So when you’re looking at the graphics on a piece of paper, it’s flat, and we’re working on a round tank and rounded covers. So when you lay the lines out they gotta be at a certain angle so they appear straight. It takes a lot of trial and error and you’re putting tape on and off and standing back to look at it. And the bike of course is on the lift and at eye level looks one way, then you put it on the ground then your lines line up differently so you gotta find the happy medium.

“The paint is super high-quality (They used House of Kolor paints on the project). When you paint stuff that’s matte finish you can’t have no dust or nothing, it’s got to be perfect because you can’t sand or buff them out,” said Gilby.

Once again they nailed it on the head. The thick, offset stripe on the front fender and fairing set the tone. The stripes flow perfectly from the tank to the side covers to the saddlebags. The lines themselves are tight and precise.

“I think the theme is awesome. When you look at the front of the bike, it’s got that racy look because it’s got one stripe off to the side, one side’s fat and the other side’s thin, so it’s got that cool, early hot rods look. Squared off, streamlined, it’s not peacocky, it’s not dancin’ around. It’s pretty much flat out,” added Gilby.

Gotta love a company where you can drop off the parts and “Wham, we went to work and got it done.”

The AMA encourages safe riding this Memorial Day weekend as we honor those who lost their lives serving our country in the Armed Forces.

The American Motorcyclist Association joins all Americans this Memorial Day, May 29, in expressing deep gratitude to the friends and families of those who gave their lives in service to the United States and in honoring their memories.

“The freedoms we enjoy, as motorcyclists and as Americans, come at great personal cost and sacrifice and are defended daily by military personnel dedicated to protecting our principles,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “It is important to pause and reflect on Memorial Day, remembering those who helped make possible the freedoms we too often take for granted, including the freedom to ride and travel throughout this great nation.”

Many Americans will take advantage of the long holiday weekend to enjoy the freedom of the road, traveling to events, to family picnics, to beaches and other attractions.

“We especially encourage motorists to be alert this weekend to motorcyclists, many of whom will be on the road to participate in AMA-sanctioned events, Memorial Day parades and freedom rides,” Dingman said. “And we urge motorcyclists to ride safely and stay alert and sober.”

American Flat Track Heads to Springfield for a Memorial Day Doubleheader

The Springfield TT returns the night before the Harley-Davidson Springfield Mile I

American Flat Track travels to the hallowed grounds of the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill., for a doubleheader on Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-28. Saturday evening will feature the return of the Springfield TT following a four-year absence with the rising stars of the AFT Singles class taking center stage. The following afternoon the AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines will be in the spotlight, as the action moves to the big track for the Harley-Davidson Springfield Mile I.

Sunday’s Harley-Davidson Springfield Mile I will mark the 84th main event held at the Mile circuit since the Grand National Championship was formalized in 1954. Over the decades, five different makes (Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, BSA, Triumph) have claimed victories on the Mile, but the weapon of choice for top contenders has been Harley-Davidson, with the American marque topping the podium in 61 out of 83 attempts.

This year, the Harley-Davidson Factory Flat Track Team is led by veteran Kenny Coolbeth (No. 2 Harley-Davidson Factory Flat Track Team XG750R), a five-time winner of the Springfield Mile including a victorious performance in the most recent running of the race last September. Additionally, his teammates, Jake Johnson (No. 5 Harley-Davidson Factory Flat Track Team XG750R) and Brandon Robinson (No. 44 Harley-Davidson Factory Flat Track Team XG750R), each rank as two-time winners of the Springfield Mile themselves.

Meanwhile, there’s little debate over who stands as the favorite heading into the weekend.

As the series hits the halfway point on its tour of five Miles in six weeks, ‘Mile Specialist’ Bryan Smith (No. 1 Indian Motorcycle Racing backed by Allstate Scout FTR750) arrives in Springfield with the AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines points lead on the strength of three consecutive wins, including back-to-back Mile victories.

Don’t look for him to slow down any this weekend; Smith has proven himself a master of the Springfield Mile time and again, with an awe-inspiring seven previous triumphs in the prestigious race.

“It’s pretty simple really – I want to keep winning,” Smith said. “Springfield’s another place where I feel right at home. And I think we can make some tweaks to my bike for Springfield that will make it even better so that we can take home another ‘W’.”

However, it would be a mistake to underestimate the challenge that stands before him if he hopes to increase that tally to eight. A combined 0.082 of a second is all that separates Smith’s Arizona Mile and Sacramento Mile triumphs from a pair of runner-ups (and just 0.642 of a second from two third-place finishes).

The Indian Wrecking Crew has dismantled the competition at the Miles in recent weeks, logging a pair of runaway podium sweeps. While Smith has emerged on top thanks to some nifty late-race maneuvering, expect Jared Mees (No. 9 Indian Motorcycle Rogers Racing Scout FTR750) and Brad Baker (No. 6 Indian Motorcycle Racing backed by Allstate Scout FTR750) to come to Springfield ready with revised tactics.

Mees is a former Springfield Mile winner himself, while Baker has shown more pace than any other rider as of late, and he’s desperate to finally secure his first win aboard the Scout FTR750.
Mees said, “I’m looking forward to the Springfield Mile and ending Bryan’s three-race win streak… and starting a new one up again of my own. Sacramento was some good racing, but I think Springfield allows the riders to move around some in the corners. It should be another good show.”

While the Indian Wrecking Crew has garnered 13 of a possible 15 podiums on the season, Sammy Halbert (No. 69 Estenson Logistics Yamaha FZ-07) splits them in the championship order in third place. Halbert has shown himself a consistent presence near the front all season long and would love to serve up an upset this weekend.

Meanwhile, young gun Jarod Vanderkooi (No. 20 Richie Morris Racing Kawasaki Ninja 650) continues to rank in the top five with another solid top-ten run last weekend in Sacramento.
Complementing the program Sunday on the Mile is the Harley-Davidson Support Class, an exhibition race designed to allow up-and-coming riders a chance to cut their teeth on the legendary Mile aboard Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

AFT Singles return to the Springfield TT

The history of the Springfield TT glitters with memorable performances by the likes of Henry Wiles, Jake Johnson, and JR Schnabel, among others. However, perhaps the standout of them all belongs to the late Nicky Hayden. Hayden, who tragically passed away earlier this week following a cycling accident, won the 2002 Springfield TT and was joined on the podium by brothers Tommy and Roger, who finished second and third, respectively.

Shayna Texter (No. 52 Richie Morris Racing Honda CRF450R) enters this year’s Springfield TT with a healthy 17-point advantage in the AFT Singles title fight. She does so following four consecutive podium results, including back-to-back wins at the recent Arizona and Sacramento Miles.

However, swapping the high-speed sliding and drafting tactics of the Miles for the chicanes, tight rights, and jumps of a TT could leave Texter vulnerable this weekend. She is the first to admit that the TT is her weakest discipline, and her points advantage may be in jeopardy. Simply advancing to the Main would be considered a personal triumph for Texter.

Kolby Carlile (No. 36 Parkinson Brothers Racing Honda CRF450R) could be well poised to strike. Showing a nice blend of all-around skills in 2017, Carlile has finished no worse than seventh this season, including a podium finish at the season-opening DAYTONA TT. As a result, he’s currently second in the standings and in strong position to steal the points lead with another big outing.

Sitting third in the point standings and looking for his first win is Brandon Price (No. 92 DPC Racing/Don’s Kawasaki KX450F). DAYTONA TT best qualifier, lap leader, and race runner-up Wyatt Anderson (No. 120 Waters Autobody Racing KTM 450 SX-F) is another rider to keep an eye on in the Springfield TT this weekend.

In addition to the on-track activities, Hall’s Harley-Davidson will be hosting a pre-race kickoff party featuring the “wall of death stunt show” on both Friday and Saturday. They will also have live music with food & beverage vendors and free admission to the show. Also on Friday night, local favorite Boon’s Saloon will be hosting a car/bike show and pre-race party.

On-track action begins on Saturday, May 27, with AFT Singles practice sessions for the Springfield TT at 2:00 p.m. CT (3:00 p.m. ET) with Opening Ceremonies commencing at 6:30 p.m. CT (7:30 p.m. ET). AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines practice for the Harley-Davidson Springfield Mile I will kick off on Sunday, May 28, at 10:00 a.m. CT (11:00 a.m. ET) followed by Opening Ceremonies at 1:00 p.m. (2:00 p.m. ET).

“World’s Fastest Indian” to be Memorialized with 2017 Bonneville LSR Run by Munro’s Nephew

It’s been 50 years since Burt Munro took his Indian Scout Streamliner to the Bonneville Salt Flats and made history – a story immortalized by the feature film, The World’s Fastest Indian, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins. As a result, Munro’s legacy transcends motorcycles and symbolizes the much broader drive to push beyond conventional limitations to experience or achieve what is seemingly impossible. Burt Munro is now a household name among “gear heads” across the globe and the ultimate example of the gritty, adrenaline-fueled pastime of expanding the limits of speed at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Munro’s iconic land speed record, Indian Motorcycle is teaming up with Kiwi road racer Lee Munro, Burt Munro’s great nephew, to recreate the historic run at Bonneville on August 13.

For the updated record attempt, Lee Munro will pilot a modern Indian Scout with a powertrain modified by the Indian Motorcycle engineering team in an effort to become the world’s fastest modern Indian motorcycle. The attempt will not break Burt’s record, but instead will honor his storied legacy in the world of motorcycling. Fueled by their own ambition to push beyond boundaries, Indian’s team of engineers volunteered to be a part of this historic attempt, working on the project “after hours.” The team will undergo several test runs in El Mirage, Calif. before Lee Munro takes to the Salt Flats of Bonneville.

“My uncle Burt was a significant inspiration for my own racing career, and his appetite for speed is clearly a part of my DNA” said Lee Munro, the grandson of Burt’s first cousin. “What Indian Motorcycle is doing is fantastic, and I couldn’t be prouder to partner with them and pilot my own Scout at Bonneville in honor of my Uncle and the 50th anniversary of his historic record.”

Born and raised in Invercargill, New Zealand, the same town as his great uncle Burt, Lee Munro first began his life on two wheels via the high-adrenaline sport of downhill mountain biking. After winning many local races, even finishing fifth in the 2002 New Zealand Championship, Lee entered into motorcycle road racing. He won his first race and captured numerous titles on every road and street race circuit in the South Island of New Zealand. With plans to race the Isle of Man, Lee attended the Manx GP in 2016 to gain knowledge of the track and better prepare himself. Most recently, Lee won the vintage class at the Methven Street Races earlier this year on a 1941 Indian motorcycle.

Liquid Asset Partners, of Grand Rapids, MI will hold a piecemeal liquidation sale and live auction at EBR’s state-of-the-art factory for all remaining assets. They will sell the factory assets in a two month on-site liquidation sale starting June 7, with a live auction June 8 that will include the state-of-the-art intellectual property and tooling used to manufacture the EBR Motorcycles, all factory production equipment, and many historical artifacts in the factory.

“This is the motorcycle deal of a lifetime,” said Bill Melvin, CEO of Liquid Asset Partners. “For any motorcycle fan the deals are too cheap to miss. You can buy anything from a race motorcycle, hand tools, and all the way to buying the iconic motorcycle brand itself. We sell at such huge discounts, people fly in from all over the world! Some people will start a new business just from buying these deals.”

The onsite public liquidation sale will start June 7 at the factory with tons of parts, tools, and historical items for sale piecemeal and will continue for two months.

The public auction will be on June 8 at the factory and will include the factory production equipment, test equipment, and numerous additional lots, including the intellectual property of EBR Motorcycles and production tooling located at suppliers across the globe.

The excess motorcycle parts, over $15 million at retail worth of inventory will be liquidated through a discounting process through the standard parts ordering process.

“This will represent the largest factory liquidation of sport motorcycle manufacturing facility,” said Melvin. “These super bike parts and equipment, which are rolling art, are selling at enormous discounts, right off the factory floor. With the sale 30 minutes from Milwaukee, the motorcycle capital of the World, it is quite a sight to see the factory in person. The sale is open to the public, and they can buy not only the motorcycles parts, but also the tools and equipment from which they were made.”

“We have no illusions, the market is very soft and we are prepared to deeply discount everything,” said Melvin. “It’s stacked high and we’re selling it cheap. Everything must be sold regardless of cost or loss. The public won’t want to miss these deals.”

Indian Motorcycle, America’s First Motorcycle Company, announced an expanded range of paint color options for the new Chieftain Limited. Since launching just over a month ago, the Chieftain Limited has become the fastest-selling bagger in Indian Motorcycle history.

Joining the Chieftain Limited in Thunder Black are four additional paint color options, including Silver Smoke, White Smoke, Star Silver over Thunder Black and Wildfire Red over Thunder Black. Priced in the U.S. from $24,999 to $25,699, the Chieftain Limited’s new colorways will be available at U.S. and Canadian dealerships starting in the middle of June.

Curated by famed motorcycle photographer, Michael Lichter, forty builders under 36 years of age have accepted the challenge to build a custom motorcycle masterpiece especially for the 2017 exhibit. In addition, 14 two-dimensional artists will present their work on the gallery walls alongside a display of artist-decorated Biltwell helmets.
