Thumbs up October issue of AIM

Just got the new issue in the mail and thought I'd throw a couple things out there....

Cover bike is sweet!! Love the fat whitewall in the back!

The Lehman trike conversion( front inside cover) of the Victory Vision is sharp, but I bet it takes up a whole lane.

I see an advertisement for the sister publication of RoadBike magazine. Good business move. Don't have a problem with it. I suppose that magazine covers Metrics and American rides as well. We all love to ride and I don't care what you ride.

I'm not really sure what to think about the column on page 22 about US Customs wanting to ban my pocketknife Don't know where that came from........

Looking forward to the November issue

Thanks for the post. Our sister magazine RoadBike used to be all metric but not any more. Now it is focused mostly on cruisers and touring - all brands.

Does anybody else have a problem with Genevieve Schmidt's October column? She stated in the last paragraph: I know a lot of people who've had to sell their motorcycles in the last 12 months because money is tight. Either they couldn;t make the payments anymore, of they needed the money for bills. No matter how much of a crunch I'm in, I'd never sell my motorcycle. I don't understand the mentality of people who can do that."

Wow! The last sentence really comes off as callous to the plight of other people's circumstance. You have to take care of your family. If the bike needs to be sold to do that, then so be it. 1. God 2. Family 3. Work 4. Hobby You have to prioritize, and take care of the basics. If selling a bike puts food on the table when there is the possibility of none, or heat in the house, or clothes on the kids' backs, then that is the way it should be. To say "I don't understand that mentality" strikes me the wrong way, and I don't understand HER mentality.

OK, the rant is over, and I feel better.

I should also add that I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the column. My wife and I love to camp off the bike. It gets you back to basics. Just didn't need that little blib at the end...

Hey Trigger. How are ya? Personally, I didn't take this piece literally. What I got from the last part of the piece was that she was a devoted rider and loved her current bike. I am sure like most of us she would sacrifice everything to take care of her family. I like to say (out loud anyway) that I would not give up my bike. But I know if push comes to shove, (and it has) the bike will be sacrificed. I read everything she writes. In this instance I understood the "spirit" of the piece. I think she was simply using text to paint a picture which, as we all know, is subject to interpretation.

Humble bow,

Kempo

Thumbs down Re: October issue of AIM-Genevieve Schmidt's October column

I disagree Kempo. Her statement was matter of fact. She could have said that would be the last thing I would sell or words to that effect but she instead said "No matter how much of a crunch I'm in, I'd never sell my motorcycle." So some guy who really has no choice but to sell his bike to feed and/or clothe his family is what, less of a biker than her. Less dedicated? At best it was poor word choice and at worst it is an elitist attitude that has never been in a position where they have no other way out for the family.

Buzz why do we never see her on here? Maybe when she writes something like this, she could tell us her meaning

Hey SgtCowboy thanks for your input. I tend to be a non-elitist and disapprove of anyone that is or thinks they are. And I can see where you would gleen from that statement that she could think of herself in that regard. As I recall she has a custom Road Glide or something? Personally, I will never have anything custom unless I can do it with Krylon or Semi-Chrome! Maybe being a writer she does not have to worry about that stuff. I may be guilty of ignoring the "tone" in which her piece was presented.

May I offer a compliment? In the Air Force you could not check a tire pressure without having a technical manual right beside you as you knelt at the tire. Once a Marine fighter emergency landed at our base (Travis). They flew in some cotton pickin Marines that took the nose and tail off that jet, put in a new engine and got ur done and flew it out in 8hrs without cracking a book. Wow wee kazawee they were good. I'll never forget that day. Just wanted to show my respect.

Thanks Mark.
Yes the Corps is a bit less formal or by the book than the other services. Most of the time it is get it up and working no matter what. I have seen them do some amazing rebuilds on Choppers (Not the bike kind) in the desert of 29 Palms. We took off from China Lake NAS after being in the field for a while and the hydraulic light came on. Before we could get it back to China Lake, which was about 2 miles, the back up hydraulic lights came on. They set the bird down and checked it out and could not find anything wrong so we pushed for them to take us back to Camp Pendelton. The Pilot called his Commander and he allowed us to go a head and fly. I do not believe that would happen in any other branch, especially in peacetime.
