Chris' Board Track Shovel Pt. 2 Not really looking to get this note published. I mostly wanted to pass along some experience to Chris Maida. This past summer I finished up a custom build Bobber (my first). The engine is a Shovelhead mostly from S&S parts using Jim's Top End Kit and Sumax Pushrods just like the stuff in the November issue. I had two problems.
First, pushrods rubbed the tubes at the cyl. head end of the tubes. A little lathe work fixed that.
Second, the blue silicone seals that came with the kit leaked. So I came up with a trick way to modify the lower pushrod tubes so they stay centered on the seals. That stopped the leaks until one of the seals split. Also had bad luck with corks. They took a set and then leaked because the Sumax tubes don't have a spring-load like traditional tubes. I now am using solid black Buna seals with excellent results. It might even be the dryest Shovelhead around.
I'd be happy to send you a sketch of the tube machining mod's if you have any interest. |
