Default 1125 Fast @ Daytona Speedway Until...

Just back from the Daytona International Speedway where Paul James and Jeff Johnson were racing a Buell 1125R and going fast (3rd fastest qualifier against Hondas and Ducatis). Paul James crashed the fast bike during warm up and took it out of the action.

The team swapped out the entire suspension from the A to the slower B bike in about a half hour, then took the B bike out. Paul was running 1:55s (which is FAST) then handed it off to Jeff who wheelied out of the pits. He only got in a few laps before part of the fairing came lose, knocked the radiator hose lose and fried the water pump taking them out of the race.

Too bad, that sucker was FAST! Makes me want to spend some ime on one of those liquid cooled Buells.

I saw one of the 1125R's at a bike show last year. If you're into trick looking mechanical gizmos , and I am, you gotta say they are very cool. The engine doesn't really look much like a traditional engine at all however. It looks kind of like a fully plumbed air conditioner pump. I guess that's OK. Just looks a little Rice Burner-ey. Rider position is definitely crotch rocket. Having said all this I would have to say I loved it. I'm a one motorcycle kind of guy but if I ever decided to get a Jay Leno (or Buzz Kanter) style garage going that 1125R would definitely be in it.

From what I understand about the 1125 it doesn't have the peak hp of the other makers' F1 bikes but it's broader hp and torque range makes it easier to ride fast. That's important to us shaggers and racers alike. The brakes are totally innovative too. I can easily see how such a bike, in pumped up form, could give the Japanese and Italian bikes a run for their money.

I've seen two '08 1125R's on the local Craigsist for sale recently. Both had around 2000 miles and they were asking $7000 for each. One at a dealer and one privately owned. I know a new '09 at a dealer runs about $14000 out the door. Such a deep discount makes me wonder if they're having a hard time selling them. I hope not. They look like great little bikes.
