I've got an old 79 FLH 4 speed totally stock that has been sitting around for several years while my priorities got shifted between work and kids (pesky little things but they kinda grow on ya after awhile). Now it is time to get her back up for some serious road trips. The gearing is set up for the 55 MPH speed limit that peanut Carter gave us at the time and I need to upgrade to hit 70 without the engine screaming. Not sure what the primary gear teeth count is (haven't pulled the cover yet) but the secondary has a 22 tooth front gear and a 51 tooth gear on the rear wheel. What is the recommended gear tooth count? I know the spedo will have to be changed after the fact but I am looking for somewhere to start. Smokey

New guy here. Joined up 'cause a friend of mine has an interesting problem.

He's riding an '05 Deluxe (FLSTN). He did a hole shot a while back and now he's got no 4th gear at all. I work on Honda's and really have no idea how a
1st gear holeshot can eliminate 4th gear.

You can shift into the 4th gear position, seems to lock in as well as all the other gears, but nuthin happens when you get there. There's no pull, no grind, no clankin', nuthin. Just like being in neutral.

All other gears lock in solid and smooth.

Anyone familiar with this situation?

Who is the over educated design "engineer" that developed the placement of the shift lever on the transmission of my 03 Ultra Classic?

I'd like to meet this *@!$ing @$$hole, give him a modest tool box, and tell him he has to remove the lever without a) removing the transmission, or b) removing the clutch/primary case!

For some reason, mine became loose. It wobbles side to side, back and forth quite a bit. The allen is cinched down, but the split collar won't tighten the lever securely to the tranny shaft.

I don't need to worry about it coming off, because there ISN'T ENOUGH CLEARANCE to come off. You see, you it slides off the shaft about 1/4 inch, then it hits the primary case, and won't go any further.

The problem is sloppy shifter linkage, and down the road, probably stripped splines in the tranny shaft.

My son's VRod is great. I can remove the shift lever so easly, it's sickening.

Feel free to join in on my complaining, or, better yet come up with a way to remove this lever and replace it.
