I ride because it is fun.
I ride because I enjoy the freedom I feel from being exposed to the elements, and the vulnerability to the danger that is intrinsic to riding.
I do not ride because it is fashionable to do so.

I ride my machine, not wear it. My machine is not a symbol of status. It exists simply for me, and me alone.
My machine is not a toy. It is an extension of my being, and I will treat it accordingly, with the same respect as I have for myself.
I strive to understand the inner-workings of my machine, from the most basic to the most complex.

I will learn everything I can about my machine, so that I am reliant upon no one but myself for its health and well being.
I strive to constantly better my skill of control over my machine. I will learn its limits, and use my skill to become one with my machine so that we may keep each other alive.
I do not fear death. I will, however, do all possible to avoid death prematurely. Fear is the enemy, not death. Fear on the highway leads to death, therefore I will not let fear be my master. I will master it.

My machines will outlive me. Therefore, they are my legacy. I will care for them for future bikers to cherish as I have cherished them, whoever they may be.
I do not ride to gain attention, respect, or fear from those that do NOT ride, nor do I wish to intimidate or annoy them.
For those that do not know me, all I wish from them is to ignore me. For those that desire to know me, I will share with them the truth of myself, so that they might understand me and not fear others like me.

I will never be the aggressor on the highway. However, should others mess with me, their aggression will be dealt with in as severe manner as I can cast upon them.
I will show respect to other bikers more experienced or knowledgeable than I am. I will learn from them all I can. However, if my respect is not acknowledged or appreciated, it will end.
I will not show disrespect to other bikers less experienced or knowledgeable than I am. I will teach them what I can.
However, if they show me disrespect, they will be slapped.
It will be my task to mentor new riders, that so desire, into the lifestyle of the biker, so that the breed shall continue.

I shall instruct them, as I have been instructed by those before me. I shall preserve and honor traditions of bikers before me, and I will pass them on unaltered.
I will not judge other bikers on their choice of machine, their appearance, or their profession. I will judge them only on their conduct as bikers. I am proud of my accomplishments as a biker, though I will not flaunt them to others. If they ask, I will share them.

I will stand ready to help any other biker that truly needs my help.
I will never ask another biker to do for me what I can do for myself. I am not a part-time biker. I am a biker when, and where ever I go. I am proud to be a biker, and hide my chosen lifestyle from no one. I ride because I love freedom, independence, and the movement of the ground beneath me. But most of all, I ride to better understand myself, my machine, the lands in which I ride, and to seek out and know other bikers like myself.

It is great here in the mountains and I have set it up for some comfort for my old bones. I do not hear much from this forum on the dyna series of bikes and wondered if there are any other Dyna owners out there. I will try to figure out how to put a photo on as it has been awhile since i tried.

I have never encountered a headlight shell as hot as mine was after a ride today.

I have one of the blue blubs in it for night time riding and will try going back to a stock one just for giggles BUT...

I got home after a ride of about 40 miles. I happened to brush against the headlight shell as I was looking at something on the front of the bike and it was HOT to the touch. So hot I couldn't keep my hand on it.

No, seriously, that hot.

Anyone run into that?
Took it to harley dealership where they took photos after puting on rack and using racheting straps, showed proof of engagement. Waiting to hear back from Harley as to what they will do if anything. Wondering if anyone else has experienced similar isuues...maybe you are wondering how your fender got dinged.
Thanks for the response,

I have a shop manual but no owners manual. I can find what quantities are required for the three holes but, I can't find in what position the bike is supposed to be in when checking the oil.

Some people say leaning on stand. Others say sitting upright which is what I kinda think.

Also some people say that you don't put the engine oil dipstick all the way in when checking oil. They say to put it in so the stopper rests against the lip of the oil filler neck.

Also, if I am reading it correctly, almost a quart of oil goes in the primary which brings it up just a bit over the bottom of the clutch face as indicated in the manual. But when I fill it that much the primary oil transitions in into the engine and blows my oil cap off. Some very experienced mechanics say you only need a pint of oil in the primary just enough to spray the chain. The bike seems to run all right with minimum primary oil. It's kinda cool. I don't have to worry about the engine running dry! And to be safe I think I might try the Lucas Oil treatment in there to make the oil a little more sticky. Mmmmm wonder what that will do with the clutch pack.

And same with the tranny. Do you stick the dipstick all the way in and fully thread it in and check it that way or do you just dip it in stopping at the top of the hole?

It's funny. I've rebuilt the carb, the forks, changed tires, changed out the stator/regulator and abouit a million other things. And still, these simple little things elude me.

Thanks for the help you guys.

We left at 0600 hrs and had a nice ride up to Lake Havasu City AZ. The Soldier was completely suprised. He came in at 1200 hrs this morning and his Mom convienced him he had to be ready at 0930 to get pictures made in his uniform. Pictures are of my Daughter standing by my Bike, Pic of the row of bikes before we took off, Pic of PGR members greeting SPC Pearson at his home and a pic of the Blue Star Mothers presenting him with a flag signed by all PGR members who were present for the ride. There were over 30 bikes and 10 cars. That is a pretty good turnout for a Monday Morning.

I almost hit a deer on my Harley going to work last weekend. Six thirty in the morning, I was on a two lane country road, running sixty, with my hands on my knees and my feet on the rear pegs. I saw it as it came on the road to the left, it was about sixty feet in front of me. It was trotting, when it got in front of me and my headlight was shining on its side I was about twenty feet away.
It looked at me, it had brown eyes, they were the size of softballs.
I got my feet on the front floor boards, hands on grips, I braced, (to late to brake) and I could see I was going to miss it.
As I went by, I could have literally slapped it on the ass.
Man that will wake you up in the morning.
Love that Harley what an experience.

This weekend we had about a dozen bikes that left from Winston Salem NC to go to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Ohio. Our group traveling on I-77 had exited the first tunnel just outside of Wytheville VA when we went around a semi-truck. The truck blew a tire taking out two riders. According to the last rider of our group (a Riders Edge Instructor) the tire struck the bike and rider knocking them both off the road. The next rider went down while trying to avoid the accident. Both riders survived. The rider that was hit by the tire had a compound fracture at his ankle. He was air lifted from the hospital in Wytheville to the hospital in Roanoke VA. Hopefully both will recover OK.

The rider in front of the two that went down, said that the tire sounded like a high powered rifle and as soon as he heard it, he looked in the mirror and there were no bikes behind him.

This is just a reminder that things can happen in an instant.
