Default all engine noises

One thing I've learned. First of all, your sitting on an engine, it makes a lot of noise and their all different. Also there is a lot of tin vibrating around. If you are running the engine with the bike on a stand or even on the ground the harmonics can take over and make a lot of noise. I have grabed a few front fenders and stopped that ratteling or that loud hollow sound that changed with the engine rpm. A newly installed windshield will also make things sound a lot different. Check the cheap stuff first than spend your money.

Exhaust pipes can drive ya nuts. I've used a mechanic's stethoscope, a cheap one at that, to find noises that stump shops. Anyone can find the area of the noise, and you'll have more facts to give the tech if taken for repair.

Welcome aboard Charlie. Enjoy!

Sure thing Charlie. And welcome to the forum.A sound starts resonating and traveling and can have you looking everywhere. I had my '85 Ironhead apart some years ago to replace leaking rocker box gaskets. I put it back together and at certain speeds it sounded like a loose wristpin, all it was was a gas tank mounting bolt not quite snugged up enough. Sincerely: Shovelmike.
