Default Dyno Your Harley?

I read and hear alot about dyno runs for modified Harleys and am curious if this is a lot of hogwash or if people really do this a lot.

I can see how a dyno will let you get the most performance you can from your Harley with fine tuning, but isn't it kinda expensive to get dyno time?

When is it worth dynoing your Harley and when can you get close enough without one?

Unless you are looking for max preformance in your ride I see no reason to dyno tune. If I am a avid racer, looking for bragging rights or need a bigger set of Nads then I will dyno a bike.

Some folks are a little anal and like things to run just right. Big problem though. The folks running the dyno better know what they are doing or they could read wrong and mess stuff up. A Dyno can also give out the wrong info depending on the one who set it up.

Go to shop that will cheat you for a pretty penny

On a fuel injected machine it is easy to obtain a Fuel "map" from someone else with the same setup as you and had a dyno run on their bike. Just download the map into your tuner/fueler and away you go. I was happy with the way my bike ran stock. I put a set of pipes and Screaming Eagle air filter along with a PCIII with a downloaded map from Fuel Moto and my bike has never ran so well. Unless I make a major change thats the last time I have to mess with the tune on the bike. All there is left to do is ride many miles.

It's not cheap but what a great way to get the max out of your ride. I'd like to dyno my bike every couple of years if I could.

When I put the Thunderheader on, the guys at my shop dyno'd my bike to check things out, air/fuel mixture and of course hp and ft#. I'm glad I did, if for no other reason than piece of mind. If I want more power, I know where and how to get it. The more you know the better off you are, sometimes.

$100 an hour seems reasonable IF the operator knows what he is doing and can find the optimum performance for your bike in an hour or two.

If you have done or have had done any modifications to your engine, it's good to know where power and torque are, and the chart is very useful to me. Especially after seeing that my engine run cooler at higher rpms.

I like to dyno just to see numerical improvement in over the winter mods. I will usually wait until a dealer has a dyno day.
