Default Shipping your bike....

Anyone shipped a bike lately? Who'd you use? Would you use them again? Do you have any reccomendations on a shipping company?

I'm in the midst of taking the big green one. I just returned from a 12 month deployment in Iraq at the beginning of March. Now I am being sent away for at least 12 months again could possibly be longer, but at least this time I'll stay in the US and I can take my bike.

I've looked at a few shipping companies online and have got a few quotes ranging between 650 and 800. Price is not an issue, just someone reliable and will take care of my bike while it's on their trailer.

I have the option to ride and I may, the trip will be just over 1900 miles, but I figure if the gov't is getting theirs I might as well get mine and make them cough up the money for a plane ticket and travel monies.

Thanks

A buddy and I are shipping our bikes from Kentucky to Colorado Springs in August, flying out to pick up the scoots and then riding around for a while and then back home. We contracted through the Harley Owners Group; the cost for each bike is about $535 one way. Go to the H-D website, click on Harley Owners Group (if you're a member), then Plan Your Ride, and finally click on Shipping. You can get the details there as well as a phone # to call to set it up. The trucking company (Federated) contracts through HOG, so it should be a bona fide deal. The pickup location has to be a business and not a residence. You will need to make arrangements as to drop location and storage of your bike until you get there.

Good luck,
Scruffy Pup

Hey Gunny just ride the bike and have the Mrs. drive the moving truck. Make a game of it to see who gets there first. Unless you really dont wanna get to where they are sending you.

Scruffy Pup- Thanks for the info...I'll see if they won't ship to a local dealer. There is not place of business that I know of to have it shipped to...maybe the HQ's for the ship yard?!?!

JC- That would be awesome if taking the family was an option, but it's not. They will remain in California while I live out on the gulf coast until the ship is finished being built...that's a moving target right now I'm looking at least 10-12 months.

Good luck on your next deployment, Semper Fi, 66-69.

unfknblbvl,

I was incorrect on the name of the trucking company - it's actually Federal and not Federated. The link to them is http://www.funtransport.com/ if you don't go through HOG (you get a better rate through HOG) and you can glean some great info.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

4cams- Thanks...I wouldn't really consider it a deployment. I just think it's crap that after being home for not even 5 months they are going to seperate me from my family for that length of time again. It's a long explanation, but basically if the Navy would have footed the bill for my plane ticket I could have stayed home until March 09, but they wouldn't and the MC said since we're paying you're going now. I'm sure you understand. I have 7 months of dwell time left, but that only applies if I were going back to the sand box. Oh well, it is what it is <----I hate that saying!

Scruffy- I found it and got a quote. With door to door and my HOG discount it comes out to 744. Pretty comparable to some others I got. I may be able to get Uncle Sam to cover the cost, but I'm not going to rely on it. I'm getting quite a bit of run around on a stupid plane ticket and what exactly I rate. I'm usually not this bitter, but....

Are they allowing you any household baggage since you're going for so long? Ift the answer is yes, you may be in luck. According to the JFTR, a motorcycle is considerd household property, not a vehicle. Check with your TMO to make sure. I was AF and that's how I moved my bike around the country. It's worth a shot. Good luck
