Re: lone wolf or run with the pack? There's always safety in numbers. Cars are way more aware of a group of bikes over seeing just one bike. If something goes wrong with your bike, one of those people in the group will stop and help you. There is something to be said for hearing all those bikes, running at the same time. In a group, you feel part of the collective. And at the end of the ride you can stop and talk with the others about your adventure. I always liked being a road guard and stopping in intersections to block traffic while the group gets through.
Some, (if not half) of the riders in a group are brand new to riding. I've seen where they are a safety problem. You just don't know what they will do. I presume that is why they put them in the back. In a group someone else is calling the shots about where you are going, how fast you are getting there, etc. If you are new to group riding, it's always a good idea to observe the group and it's riders. You can learn a lot. You have to have confidence to ride that close and that fast with other riders that are mere feet from your bike. You have to have confidence in their skills too.
Humble bow...
I group ride on big runs, like to Sturgis. I wear black leathers, ride a Harley and wear Harley tee-shirts so I can be an individual!
