I would keep the BMC as a roller... use the motor and tranny for the next build.... after I get the funds.,.. I can get another motor... put the BMC back together and then the new motor goes in the project...

wow all spelled out.... it looks like more work than needed. but that is just a plan for now

A basket with at least 90% there would be ideal, I just havent seen the right one. (plus I spent most of the project money on the wifes jeep and
I gotta save up again)

Well if that is what you want to do, I would not pull the motor out of the BMC until the last second.
That is a lot of swapping motors back and forth, a couple of bikes in pieces.
I would find a frame that you want to start with, and then go from there.
Start changing the frame the way you want it, and then worry about a motor.
Don’t rule out something out of the box, you can pick up a Sportster or Buell pretty cheap.
Cut off the transmission, run a big twin trans, put on the open.
I don’t like to post other build sites in here, but I know Buzz does not mind, check out this, there are some real good ideas on builds here.

Good idea, waiting for the last moment to dis-assemble the bmc. It just has so much rust.... little spots, but all over the bike. I almost feel like it needs to be re-built to make it nice again. and while the motor is out... well......

I like that bike alot, but there are days when I want to have a hot rod that corners a little better. dragging the primary every time i take a left turn, gets old after a while....guess that why I am setting a goal for a 3rd bike

Yesterday, I went into a (left)corner... (on purpose) I just layed the bike right on the ground...sparks flying from the kickstand.. I let go of my left hand and tried to touch the ground. I got about 4" from touching it. the guy behind me said it looked pretty cool. too bad no one takes pictures of me on that thing when I ride.

Uncle-P, hope I can enter back in the conversation here....
Have you considered just buying a decent old shovel that's mostly all there, and a runner? I have seen them as low as 5 to 6 grand lately. I know that's twice as much as the $2500 for the rolling chasis, but crap-- it would be the whole dang bike, nicely titled as a --- whatever, HD. And something to work on while you leave the BFC untouched. You'd never be without wheels; dont know about you, but that's important to me.

Bigincher.... I absolutely agree with your view.
I may have no right here since I have only been a by-stander on this thread, but building a H-D will help keep some value, and lets face it, H-D rules!!!
And its so much fun putting a Harley together, especially when you have a vision and when the project is finished..... whaaa.laa !!!!!!!!!!
Just my 2 cents....

Well, this is gonna be a 1-day thread....

Big
You are right on there.... I went back out and took a nice long look at the BMC. It would be a shame to tear into a good running bike. It really is still a nice bike, looks good, from 10 feet back, until I address the rust. and I will have it to ride while working on the shovel.
I found 2 or 3 complete, together, running shovels on craigslist in that price range... titled and ready.

HC
I think you had another good idea, but I just cant bring myself to cut up that bike. thanks for the ideas tho,

Streetbob
having an all HD bike is really the way to go in the long run. just in case I wanted to sell it, it would be all HD.

So that confirms it. I am back on the hunt for a shovel project, Mostley it is gonna be doing side jobs to get the money back under the mattress, untill there is enuff. I guess my ride yesterday made my mind wander off track.

Thanks guys. for letting me bounce that idea off the board here.

Hey,pyscho
I was tempted to comment on all the above earlier...but figured you'd come back to your senses all on your own...sooner or later...

I leave for Laughlin Wednesday morning... 700 miles each way, I will let my mind wander then, but at least I wont be near any major tools until I get back.
