Do what you want is what I say.
I do wear them at the track, even when not making passes, however I thought we were talking street here. And thank you for permission to "do what I want"!

I wear a good-fitting 3/4 helmet with a comp shield. No ear or bug problems.

I wear foam ear plugs on longer rides. I believe I can hear my motor just fine. Can also hear my rider fine too.

I hear ya... I actually just ordered a 3/4 daytona helmet. Going to try it out, and if I like it, I want to get it pinstriped

Probably real similar to the daytona I just got.

I really want this look from a justified defiance redone Buco or old Shoei

But I don't want to pay $300 for a non-dot 30yr old helmet. So I'll rock the new DOT one and if I like it, get it pinstripped later.

When I wear a full face helmet (which is not very often) I don't wear ear plugs. Don't need 'em. But when I wear my favorite helmet, one of those little "pudding bowl" jobs the european road racers wore in the '50's and early '60's, the wind noise in my ears is way too much so I wear foam plugs. I can still hear the mid range engine noises like the muffs fairly well but the high end tinkle-ee stuff and wind is way down. Not gone but way down. I'd like to wear those aqua jobs but they don't fit my ears. Like Ken I'm trying to preserve my hearing. Too many years in construction with loud sudden noises have already taken their toll. Also, it's nice to get off the bike after a bit of a putt and not have that loud ringing in my ears. Real nice!

I can testify from personal experience that it won't provide any protection when you get a bee stuck between your helmet strap and your ear, however. Ow.
I used to use cigarette butt filters, but I quit smoking a year ago.

I have to wear ear plugs at work frequently, and have found them to work good for wind noise when I ride my bike out on open roads, but prefer not to wear them around town or at lower speed. The bugs, bees, rocks, ect. you have to accept as part of the deal when you ride without a skid lid with face shield or full face helmet, and I like to have them when weather dictate's the riding gear that I will be needing
