Default Smooth ride for old man with bad back

I will be 60 next year and have had 3 back surgeries, have a ruptured disc in my neck, surgery on my shoulder for a torn rotor, bad knee and elbow, but I love to ride. I just sold my Harley Sportster because the ride was too rough. What bike would have the smoothest ride or best shocks so I can ride again.

Smooth is what you want? - try an FL, evo era. The seating position is great, the ride is smooth and you can get anyone of a number of seats that have back rest options.

TC era FLs are also a nice ride. Definatly can tell the rear air suspension is there. also get a good seat. Corbin can take your measurements and make one for you and can tell you which one provides the best back support.

Tom- I agree, twinkies are also a nice ride, but a few things prompted me to recc the evo:
1 - our friend Mike has had a number of surgeries, how much riding do you think he is going to do - enough to warrant the upcharge for a TC? Evo era Classic trim baggers are going for $9,000 and less around me.....a TC costs considerably more
2 - the TC is a a heavier bike and our rider is going to be 60, personally I'd go with the lightest bike possible (a relative thing in terms of baggers, for sure!)

but when it is all said and done - no matter which way you go - the Zeppelin Air seat or the cop seat with the air shock sure are sweet options, if not hideous looking, if your looking for comfort...me? I will stick with my Mustang with back rest, a great setup for touring and still decent looking

but as always -> YMMV

steveb, please give us poor old feeble men a break. He's only 60, not 95. I'm getting mighty close to 60 and can still manage to get my feeble muscles and bones to keep my FLHT upright. Seriously mike0301, any of the Harley FLTs are hard to beat for a soft ride and with the reversed triple trees, the steering effort is light and they handle great at speeds below 90MPH.

hahha!!! damn I am in my mid 40's and I want a light bike as they are easier to poodle around on, and are more fun to ride than a lardass....doesnt have nutting to do with feeble bones or being old and weak....

In my 'mid-forties' I was riding a hardtail custom, running sub 40 minute 10K races, and chasing bad guys. I felt just like Steveb...no 'geezer bike' for me! Now 58 years old, and one hernia and a nerve stroke later, I am riding a 'built' TC FLH and still having the time(s) of my life. The nerve stroke caused permanent nerve damage to my right leg, and constant lower back pain. Load up on the "3M's" (M&M's, and Motrin) and I can ride the FLH on 500 mile day trips and enjoy every mile.

howdy colonel - i do indeed have a geezer bike - big blue, my 91 FLHTC - but i have taken as much crap off it as i could have and compared to the newer bikes, it is smaller feeling and rides "smaller"....i was reccomending that a "light bike" - relative terms in terms of a dresser for sure - is a desireable thing!

Hey, Steve...(I'm a 'Steve, also)...I see what you mean. Staying with the original thread, I just wanted a guy my age to know, that with a bad back, I believed the Touring class had more to offer in the comfort arena. I do miss being 'nimble', but my numb right leg precludes throwing myself into corners..try trail braking with a numb right foot..LOL. See 'ya on the roads!!

Mike, I have a rotator cuff problem as well and a few other problems with my back. I had a Sportster and sold it as well because it was not comfortable. I bought a 2005 Softtail Delux and its GREAT!!!! Smooth ride, beach handle bars that is very comfortable to ride with. I have had many bikes in my life but this bike is my favorite one I ever had. I will keep this bike forever, if I blow it up I will just replace the engine with another one. I hope you find the bike thats right for you but this is my suggestion. Go to Harley have a seat on one and maybe this could be for you.... Good Luck and Ride safe... Sal........
