Default Sportster won't go into gear

I have a 98 1200 custom, it won't go into gear. Sounds as if the gears are not lined up properly and are not engaging. Doesn't go into any gear. I have the primary cover off. Any help on what to look for would be appreciated, Thanx, Steve R.

What happened before it wouldn't go into gear?

Street Bob,
I was rolling along at highway speed 55mph +/-. my lane opened up and I rolled on the throttle and heard what sounded like the gears not aligned and had no forward drive in any gear, Steve R.

Sheared key somewhere..... check your clutch basket, pull it off the main shaft of your trans.
Can you still hear it actually shifting, or nothing at all?
Could be a broken Pawl inside the tranny?
It will have to be taken down anyway to find out!

Street Bob,
I already have the left primary cover off, but wasn't really sure what to look for other than some loose or broken part in the fluid or in the case. I also posted in the sporty section of the forum and someone replied to do a shifter pawl adjustment. I wanted to make sure of anything on the left side before i put the cover back on. Thanks for the heads up. Iwill check it out as soon as I can
