Default Warranty and the Magneson Moss Warranty Act.

Seem as though many Harley Dealers are violating the ZMagneson Moss warranty act. This LAW has two important provissions. ONE: A company can't deny warranty coverage because an after market part was installed UNLESS that part caused a problem and TWO: A company CANNOT require the customer to purchase service from the DEALER in order to keep the warranty in effect. So my dealer (EX DEALER)in Arizona (BUDDY STUBBS) would not cover a part that fell off my bike because I decided to do my own 1,000 maintenence versus paying them some outragious sum to change the oil. So, be forwarned that your warranty may well be dependant on paying your stealer Thousands over the life of the bike.

Sorry droptop but based on what you wrote if this part fell off because of a maintenance procedure that you performed then you can't hold the dealer responsible. Now if this part that fell off had nothing to do with the work performed and it was a factory part then you have a case. Man, you don't know how hard that was for me to say considering how i feel about most dealers-rips!

If you are checking fasteners and find one loose, do not just tighten it.
Take the damm thing out, apply the appropriate loc-tite and then tighten it to factory specs.
Make sure you actually have a lock washer on it if it is supposed to have one.
Put one on it if it acts like it needs one
Loc-tite....Shovelhead glue!!!

With all due respect to the loc-tite users, I never Loc-tite anything except a cone-compensator on the end of a .45 barrel...
With experience, common sense and a little nut'n bolt touching once in awhile, you shouldn't have any probs with loose hardware...
Dis-mantling motorsickle parts that have "glued" can be horrible...
My opinion...

I'll agree with frisco as I regularly go thru and check my hardware (among other things). Its a great way to get familiar with your ride.It has on occasion also got me to take note of an issue before it became a problem.

I do however use loc-tite. I rarely use the red and believe that it is intended for parts that will not becoming apart. I regularly use the blue. It has helped in keeping my hardware tight and comes apart as intended.

Please don't get me wrong! NOTHING can replace regular maintenance. Never totally rely on any locking agent to hold forever or even properly. Different circumstances give different results of course!
Frisco, I agree totally with your glued statement.
Proper use gives very satisfactory results.
I have worked on bikes where I swear that the last guy dipped the hardware in loc-tite! A real some beach to work on!
IMO a half drop to ONE drop works great every time.
I have seen ruined mainshafts and clutch hubs on too many shovels due to some moron using green loc-tite on the hub nut.
IMPOSSIBLE TO REMOVE! Even with an acetylene torch and a 600ftlb impact gun!

Based on this thread I did some research. First I called four dealers in my local area. The first 3 wanted $210 PLUS fluids and gaskets to do the 1000 mile service on my 07 street glide. They all mentioned adjusting the primary chain with this service. Then when asked about the self adjuster on the 07 they said "well we check it". And they all wanted to have the bike for a couple of days. They also told me that if I did not have an authorized harley stealer do the service my warranty would be no good. Then I called Carlton Harley in Mantua, Ohio. The told me $180 was the total, fluids and all, and I could make an appointment and they would do it while I waited. They also told me that the other three were lying about the warranty to scare me into buying service. I then called H-D corporate in Milwaukee and they agreed with Carlton and even referenced Mag-Moss in saying that the only way they could require this service be done at a dealer is if they provide it at no cost. Point here, call around and find an honest dealer, or spend $58 on a service manual and DIY.

It'd be interesting, and bridge burning, no doubt, to do an experiment at those shops that "check the primary anyway".

A dab of nail polish hidden to make sure the primary cover was pulled.

And raise a stink if it wasn't.
