Default Running wires in handle bars

I'm thinking of running my wires for my controls through my handle bars. I have a 98 1200c. Can I just cut the wires and splice them or do I have to run all new wiring? The shop that I go to says it's about 4-5 hours labor to remove gas tank and run new wires at a cost of about 5-6 hundo. I say for that much I can deal with the wires the way they are.

Just remove the wires from the stock harness to pass the wires then match up the colors to reinstall.

If you do it, make sure you follow Todds advice in paragraph 5. "It's important to stagger the splices". I have seen guys just make one cut in the harness, then realize what a "LUMP" they are gonna have with all the splices in one place.

Also do not put the splices where they will be flexed, The joints where soldered will be ridgid.

Did this on my 04 Heritage with mini apes 4" bent back risers. Stagger the wires get heat activated shrink wrap for wires its better than tape. 2 pair of hemostats are real handy for holding the wires in place while soldering. You will have problems with finding the right color coded wire without buying alot more wire than you need. I put a 6" splice midway inside the bars with all black wire that way I had the proper color code wire at my switch connections. Make good notes for all the color to switch connections and its a breeze and looks real nice when your done. Took me about 3 evenings after work to complete. Good luck!
