Default Lowers - When To Ride With

After many years of dismissing baggers as old man's bikes, I finally bought a used Harley Ultra a couple of years ago when I turned 50 (yikes) and very much enjoy the bike.

I am curious who rides with the lowers on all the time, who rides with them some of the time and who never rides with them installed?

I put them on late in the season when it starts to get real cold and leave them on for early spring riding. Then pop them off when the temperature warms up.

Buzz,
I just have the soft lowers that I use for my EG classic, I use them when the temps are to be below 40 for an extended period. They just snap off and on so it's a breeze. I was told by some of the life time riders that the 40 degree number seems to be the magic number as far as heat on the engine, and I must say it seems to work well for me.

I removed my lowers during a long spell of 100 + degrees a couple of Summers back, this made for a noticeably cooler ride. I found that I missed the storage a lot, I haven't removed them since.

I have the soft lowers as well, I live in half prairie and half mountain so I'll either get cold, wet, or cold and wet weather. They keep the rain\snow off the boots and the wind from going up you know where. Then when it warms up they can come off easily for 1 or 2 weeks.

I have a Classic, not an Ultra, so no hard lowers for me. I don't think I would want them, just personal preference.

A couple months back one rather frigid night, I was leaving my shop and made an immediate detour to the HD shop, and bought the only pair of soft lowers they had on the shelf. Made a world of difference for my toes. The only thing I don't like about them is they don't have a hole cut out for highway pegs. If I ever find a pair of pegs I like, I may have to dump these on eBay, and find a pair with the cutout.

Does the Ultra come with the quick-detach kit already on the lowers, or do you have to add it yourself?

You have to add the quick detach kit yourself.

I have an '08 so I can open the fairing lower vents. If I didn't have this feature I would install the quick-detach kit for hot summer riding. As it is, I leave the lowers on all the time.

Hey Buzz, Have you seen these.
Motorcycle mounts, engine guard covers, motorcycle drink holder, desert dawgs: Desert Dawgs Rain Guards for Harley Davidson Road King, Ultra, Electra, Road Glide, Street Glide
They say "allow engine cooling – NO temperature restriction!"
I'm thinking of getting them. Willy

I have two bikes... '06 Ultra Classic with the vents... Like Caraway says,.... I open the vents in the summer so I leave the lowers on all the time.
the other bike is a BMC Chopper..... uh, no windshield, no faring, no lowers, no radio, no cigar ligher, no GPS almost no suspension (but not a rigid).
IUlove 'em both.

My classic has lowers. I take mine off in the spring and don't install until the weather gets colder. During summer riding I have desert dawgs (soft lowers) in the saddle bag incase I run into rain. Lowers help the feet stay warmer and dry, but I feel my bike runs cooler without lowers. The other thing I noticed since I changed my floorboards to being angle mounted, I scrape the bottom of my lowers about the same time I do the boards. all the paint is off the bottom and the lowers are ground thin and flat.
