Default Who's got busted fairing brackets on the batwing

Hi All,

I have had 2 of the top (main) fairing brackets bust on my 07 FLHX as well as both of the side brackets that mount under the speakers.

It now seems to be vibrating again but, not as bad. I'm guessing one of the bottoms on the main bracket is busted now!

I have added nothing to the fairing but a chrome windshield strip so, this should not be breaking. This should really be taken care off for free. The deal made me pay for the brackets but, I put them in myself.

Anybody Else?!?!

Wheelies on a street glide? Come now. You must have done some motor mods to pull that off. Please advise.

Never had a problem with the mirrors.

Added the dash-mount mirrors to my Electra Glide, and haven't had a problem.

definetly a problem. i know of three friends with street glides who have had this problem. haven't heard of this problem with other touring bikes. don't know why it would only be the street glide cuz their all the same. one of my buddies made his own brackets out of thicker material and has had no problem since. i have 7500 miles on my 07 steert glide and so far no problem. but if they brake i will make my own. the factory ones are junk. just my two cents.

I assume you are talking about the small (zinc plated silver) side brackets that attach under the speakers?

If you are talking about making the main (black painted that holds the stereo in) brackets then, that guy is my hero! That would be some SERIOUS fabrication work.

Both the side brackets and the main fairing supports have broken on my '99 FLHT. I replaced the side brackets a couple of times before both of the main supports failed.
My fix was to replace both brackets and supports, but before installing them, I sanded the paint off at the weak points (the places where the old brackets and supports broke), scratched up the metal real well with sandpaper and cleaned the area with acetone.
I then applied a layer of aramid fiber tape and JB Weld over that area mixing the two together as I applied the mixture. I let it cure for 24 hours before installing. The arimid tape can be found at hobby shops (it looks like strands of hair). I also placed a couple of thin neoprene washers between the brackets and fairing when I installed them.
It's been over thirty thousand miles since the fix and the brackets are still holding.
I noticed that J&P Cycles started carrying a repair kit for this that includes a metal bracket, two pop-rivets and a drill bit. I would probably try that kit before replacing the main fairing supports again.
I hope this info helps someone.

That's all good! I love J&B weld. It's an epoxy with "structural" fillers added to it. Just plain epoxy is fairly brittle by itself. Aramid fibers are cool too. I'll bet if Harley had just mounted the fairings in rubber grommets or washers like you did and beefed up the hole areas none of you guys would have had these problems.

One of the brackets broke at the usual spot. Took both pieces to a buddy with a welder, he took all of 2 minutes to line them up and ...30 seconds worth of pretty bright sparks...done!

A lot of ways to beef up that stupid (and cheap, hoaky *^&%@edup) design
