Unhappy Hard bag fell off in Dallas

I was standing outside North Star Motors in Dallas last week (It's on the access road to I-30) when I heard a loud scraping noise. I glanced at I-30 just in time to see a hard saddle bag sliding down the road. It got clipped by one car and that took the lid off. The next car flattened the lid. Luckily the bag ended up on the shoulder after, of course, it's contents where deposited in the middle of 5 lanes. The rider had stopped, walked back, and just stood watching the aforementioned contents being pummelled by noon traffic. He wisely chose to abandon the folders/papers/pile that was left and took the bag back to the bike. I don't know how often this happens, but each of my bags now have a 1/4-20 bolt and locknut in the front mount. Yes, it's not as quick to disconnect, but it's not going to fall off!

That stinks. The same thing happened to me many years ago on my Harley FXRS-Conv when one of the "convertable" saddlebags dissappeared while riding. Lost it with my cell phone and lots of other stuff and never saw it again.

I later heard this happened a lot on the old FXRs.

You should check the mirrors more often, Buzz!

This must be a kind of common thing, I have a friend that lost a hard bag, too, only his actually passed him going down the road! Don't know how that happened, but with some glass work and repaint, his is back in shape.

My guess is Buzz's mirrors were shaking so much from excessive speed that all he would have seen was a blur.

I will stick to the leather bags with a little Parachute Cord as backup incase the zippers and clasps don't hold. So far no hint of wanting to leave my bike.

You know I always check to make sure the little clips are locked when I put the bags back on....never had a problem....it is like a pre flight check list ..........get in the habit ...reduces the chances.

Seen lids from the older style hard bags (clips on the back) part ways. Always amazed, no matter how many bounces off the pavement, they're in one piece. Scuffed all to hell, but in one piece!
