"biker on the pil," I stand corrected! How could I omit the models that put the "garbage" in "garbage wagon." And, I will have you know that we no longer use zip ties on the scrap glass bags on FLH models, as of 2005, having proved too cumbersome and bad for the environment when improperly discarded, we have again resorted to baling wire. A much more versitile and resusable product that holds up rather well in the UV with little stretch to boot.
HDDon - To each his own! If it makes you feel good considering a softail model a bagger, then get on with it and ride it hard, I just don't think it fits the bill in the true meaning of the word "bagger." Point to ponder - sitting in a bar, rib joint, church, where ever and it is bike night. You strike up a conversation with someone and ask what they ride, they reply "a bagger." What is the picture in your head? A V-Rod or Sportster with some bags thrown on or is it a Road King, Road Glide, Electra Glide..... any one of the big touring models?
The roadking classic has soft bags and it's still a bagger so that pretty much says that bag material is irrelevant. Soft bags and hard bags have been around a long time and they are meant to carry stuff for trips. I actually prefer the larger hard bags as you said, they tend to hold more, offer better protection and don't look bad after a few years of rain and sun.
As far as what makes it a true bagger, I wouldn't want to ride a sporty on a 1000 mile trip and call it a bagger just because I threw a few bags on it. BIG and COMFORTABLE with Factory Installed Bags (hard or soft) would be my definition of a true bagger.

Reason: addition
To me a Bagger is a FLHT_ . I've had a Dyna for 18 years with nice leather bags, a leather trunk on the luggage rack, and a windshield. I never thought of the Dyna as a Bagger. Now I have a Bagger, and it is a FLHTC.
I also have never referred to any of my Harleys as a "Hog". JMO
