Funny, I have a GPS in my car but never really thought of mounting one on my motorcycle. Might be that most of my bikes are 6-volt
Perhaps I'll get a motorcycle friendly GPS for my Harley Ultra.

I've been using my Garmin StreetPilot from my car...found a motorcycle mount at Rider's Wearhouse and never looked back. I like the added knowledge of not getting stuck out in the boonies with no gas, the ETA feature is nice, and you'll learn just how far off your speedo is. I can program a route to follow (actually preprogram via laptop), or let the GPS guide me. Its a great resource.
You will never see a gps on any of my bikes..... thats the whole reason to ride... explore!!!!
but that's just my opinion.
I dont even use one for work, and my job takes me from the golden gate bridge to the Oregon border, and over to almost Sactramento..and all the towns in between.

Got a mount for mine I use in the car from GPSCity. I like to turn on unfamiliar roads and just go. It is nice to just hit home and know how to get back. On longer trips, it is nice to know how much further to the next turn so you are not looking too early or too late. You will find that your speedo is probably a good bit off also. Everyone I talk to that have used one on the bike says that the bike speedo reads higher than actual.

Well that being said I know a few people that said they found more great back roads with their gps than ever before. You simply tell it to avoid highways.
I want to get a zumo unit for my bike. GPS, XM radio, and MP3 player all in one. Waterproof with easy access buttons. But new at about $700. YIKES!!

That's my opinion, too, Unc....! I carry a map, and if I want to find "the road less travelled", I just look at the map.
Oh excuse me, I may have have spoken out of place--- I ain't got no stinkin bagger!!
So..... maybe on a 'bagger' it would fit right in. After all, it's so much different on a bagger, right? (rolls eyes)
One of my buddies has a Garmin Zumo on his Street Glide. As Gas Man said and with my buddies GPS we rode many, many great back roads through out Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. I believe if it wasn't for his GPS we would have never found these roads. When the time comes for me to get a bagger I will have one just for that reason.
Buzz to answer your question I don't think it's just in the Northeast.

This post kind of made my ears perk up.... perhaps there is a meaningful use for a gps on a motorcycle, after all...! I'm just saying.............
