Default Front Brake Master Cylinder

I'm hoping someone can help me.

The screws on my front brake master cylinder keep backing out and leaking brake fluid? Has anyone had this problem on an 2004 Electra Glide?

Did you recently fill it up. It will leak if its too full. Man I hope you did not strip the threads

Default Front Brake

When I went to check the fluid the first time I forgot to swing the bars to the left it leaked all over the place.

I filled it back up and tightened the screws and went for a ride. It was leaking out of the screws, I tried removing some fluid but it weaps out of the screws.

The screws will tighten up in the garage, but loosen up after a ride? I tighten them back up and then they loosen again.

In a normal situation I would use locktite, but not in this application!

It should not loosen that easy. I think you may have almost stripped her. Did you check the threads for wear? May need to re- thread. I dunno if I would use loctite. I am sure the brake fluid will break it down and it will end up in your lines.

Hey

If JC is right and the holes are stripped you might try this before going to the trouble of drilling out and tapping one size larger OR drilling deeper and threading deeper..

Often the screws in those applications are waay shorter than the hole is threaded.. Put on the cover, with gasket of course, and thread in a longer screw of the same size.. In-other-words find out how deep the threads are and get or cut a pair that will get down as far as possible into good Un-stripped threads.. If there is not enough thread length for this fix and stripped threads are indeed the prob, well,, drilling and tapping is the word..

Default Re: Front Brake Master Cylinder

Flathead before you start looking at the body of the master cylinder check the cap. If you overtighten the cap you can crack the small web between the screw hole and the edge. The cap has a recess for the screw and if it is cracked, when you tighten the screw it allows the hole to spread and become larger. This larger hole allows the screw to loosen. It is hard to see and may require magnifacation. If you have a chrome cover when you snug down the ccrew you will notice a dark line as the crack spreads. Hope this helps.
