Default Caliper Rebuild

What's involved in rebuilding brake calipers? Is it something most of us can do ourselves or should we leave it to the pros as it involves the brakes? Has American iron shown us in the past?

Hello again Bag
Very simple..

Usually a rebuild requires only a couple 0-Rings..

If single-action (0ne piston/puck moves and draws both the pads onto the rotor) you break the caliper in half, pull out the piston/puck, replace the o-ring, push it back in then bolt it together again..

If it is a dual action (2 + pistons/pucks pressing pads against the rotor) you also break the caliper apart then pull out both pistons/pucks and replace the o-rings and push them back in..
There is also small o-ring between the halves to replace, it transfers fluid from one half to the other..
While apart blow out the passages,,,, too easy..

Unless there is fluid leaking there might not be a reason to rebuild..
Are you sure it needs re-building, maybe the Master-Cylinder instead..
Dirty contaminated fluid is sometimes at fault for sluggish braking..
Something to think about..

Calipers are perhaps the most simple and easy piece of machinery on the sickle..

To add to what frisco said, if you can't pull the piston out you may use low press (under 20 psi) air to blow it out. Face it, piston down placing a block of wood under piston. Remove bleeder screw then blow air through bleeder screw and it should pop right out. You may want to put a shop towel over it while doing this to prevent the brake fluid from coming back on ya as well as safety glasses. Like frisco said though unless they're leaking they are probably good. Good Luck and Merry Christmas.

If you use compressed air be extremely careful,it's easy to send a piston out at serious muzzle velocities.
If you're doing four piston brakes it's difficult to get both pistons out without the correct tool.I have used snap ring pliers (the kind for removing exhaust retaining rings) by exerting pressure inside the piston with the pliers & gently rocking back & forth till the piston is out of the bore.

Great little article from Lyndall

Depending what type of caliper you're playing with, if it's the 4 piston, and you're NOT leaking, clicky here.
I've done this and it works!
