Default 72 ironhead sporster brake options

Would like to install springer front end on my sporty.however finding master cylinder issues with using a new style brake caliper and using mid 70s hand controls on handle bars. I like these controls using blank off plates instead of switches however 3/4 master cylinder when most new brake calipers require 5/8 bore. I have done it in the past wiyh my pan but was dissapointed in response of front brake. Remeber that I must use these hand controls due to old style clutch cable any advice I would like to stop!!!

I don't think there's anything you can do other than go to the smaller master cyl... I've had to do it several times to get the better braking with the newer calipers... I put a new 9/16 cylinder with no switch housing on my shovel for the Grimeca caliper I'm using, great feel...
Whatever the caliper demands to work properly is what you will have to do OR get used to the crappy feel and braking of the 3/4 cyl...

What does changing the master cylinder have to do with using your old style clutch cable, you just want them to match..?? Talk to me...

you cant chage the master cylinder on the 72-81 hand controls.
It is the clutch side of the hand controls for these years that is causing issue. The older cable style it not the same as the evo and up. so I am having problems with getting a decent set of hand controls that have this style cluch perch. It would be nice if manufactures wouls reconize that we need a 5/8 bore set of hand controls with a 72-81 clutch mount!

Maybe someone else can make better sense outa what you're saying or asking...
You asked about a 3/4 master cyl that you now claim cannot be changed, so why did you even mention it..?? What does it have to do with the clutch issue..??
BTW, you can change the master cylinder unit on anything you want...

"" It would be nice if manufactures wouls reconize that we need a 5/8 bore set of hand controls with a 72-81 clutch mount!"" Someone explain what he means by this statement...

anyone know of a set of hand controls for 1972 thru 1982 that has an interchangable master cylinder stock for these controls are 3/4 inch bore would like to drop to 5/8/bore? also 1972 thru 81 has a differant clutch cable end if you use newer controls with 5/8 bore it will not work with this early style clutch cable or am I completely wrong?

I believe that your clutch cable issue is that the later cables use an eyelet on the cable end and a pin to hold the cable in the lever.
The earlier cables use a slotted pin that the cable slips into.
This slotted pin will fit into the newer style levers easily, replacing the pin that would go thru the eyelet on newer cables
This arangement will work without any problems.
You can use any year range hand controls you desire.
Evaluate, adapt, overcome, don't let the stupid thing beat you!
Oh yeah, Barnett will make any "conversion" cable you want too.
