Default Chrome Removal

this winter I plan on dismantaling my 04 Springer for some custom touches, and modifications. Does anyone know of a good/reputable powder coater and chrome remover that can remove the chrome from my springer. i want to powdercoat it the same color as the bike. The factory chrome is rusting all over the place no matter what i do to stop it. Cheap chrome is all i can say! Thanks in advance for any input on this.

If you search the site for powder coat(ing) in one of the posts there is link to find local powder coaters. If I happen to come across it I'll post it up here.

I hear ya on the cheap chrome...looking at my bike I could thousands replacing the cheap chrome with better chrome or powder coated parts.

Any local chrome place can remove your chrome no problem. It's just the reverse of applying chrome. If you take it to a powder coater they would probably just send it to a chrome place to have the chrome taken off.

A buddy of mine used to do his own de-chroming and re-chroming of pitted little car emblems and dash board stuff from old cars he was restoring. He made his own little rubber lined vat, poured some kind of acid in it and hooked up electrodes to the part and the vat (I believe....this was thirty years ago so I'm just pulling this stuff out of my "Way Back" files in my brain). Then he hooked up a DC electric source ( I think he used a battery) and all the chrome left the part and was stored into the solution. Then he took the part out and cleaned up and polished any imperfections caused by the previous corrosion. Then he put the part back in and reversed the electodes and the chrome in the solution was put right back on the part. It came out looking like new. In some cases I think he had to plate another metal ( I believe...) like copper under the chrome depending on the base metal.

Anyway, this is just a little story for here. Definitely not suggesting you do this, although you could for sure. Personally I'm not a big fan of powder coating. It's not the miracle cure some believe it is but if you just like the look then go for it. I'd have it re-chromed but have them put on more chrome and do a real good prep. It's not cheap though to have it done right at good shop.

Good Luck Dude

Don't think you need to remove the chrome, just coat over it.

Any decent powder coating guy should be able to media blast it and then powder it. no problems.

Here's the link to find a local powder coater in your area
