Default Exhaust Tape II

Soak the tape for 10 - 20 minutes before applying. It lets you get a tighter wrap, and it keeps the mess down from the tape (which is right of there with installing fiberglass insulation).

I haven't taped the pipes on my current ride, but I have on other rides. Maybe if I had a black paint job, and in particular if I had a Nightster in flat paint. But my ride's paint and goodies scheme just doesn't suit pipe wrap.

A friend recently used the wrap and high temp silver paint from DEI Design Engineering, Inc. - Exhaust / Header Wrap

He wound up putting his heat shield back over the wrap and hasn't had any issues.

Thumbs up Re: Exhaust Tape II

I also used heat tape on my 2000 XL1200C, it also sports an S&S 89" kit. I wanted to keep it a little more low key so I also slapped the heat shields back on with no problem. You have to look pretty close to even know that the wrap is on.

I have it on my 99 FLHTC, partially for appearance and partially because I have had good experiences with it cutting heat on previous bikes. With the header lay out on the twin cam it is not as good. Lots of heat on the insides of the legs Not so extreme that it is a problem, but noticeably warmer than with stock heat sheilds . I have yet to run it on a day above 75-80 F so I'm not sure if it will stay.

I had the DEI wrap and silver DEI paint on the pipes of my 81 Shovel. The looks is what I was after. The tape did not seem to make the pipes run any cooler and if it did make it run any cooler it was not noticable. If I got my heel against the pipes while I was riding my heel would still melt. I did install my wrap after soaking it in water and this helped keep the itching from the fiberglass to a minimum and it helped me get a tighter wrap.

I have also watched guys tie the end of the tape to something immobile like a shelf or water spicket.... to allow you to keep good tensioin on the tape as you wrap.

Yeah soak it like this

Then tie up like this

That what this guy did to aid in keeping it tight...

Then spray with heat paint to seal em

Mount and then smoke em to cure...
