Default HD GPS Units

Has anyone purchased the HD GPS units, not sure which one to go with? Is it worth the investment to go with the HD unit or are there other units that are just as good. Nothing from HD is cheap!

It would be nice to see a new section in the forum rating parts and accesories etc.

No help from me, I prefer to refer to the paper map prior to a ride, then go for it. But, there is a section for parts and accessories, I guess this is where you could add in your ratings of the different equipment available out there.

Or were you talking about the fancy rating scale like the one Buzz did for the battery tender rating...

Hey Flat...

I use a handheld Garmin. I can either use it in my cage, mount on the handle bar of my bike, or take it on a lake with me to look for those primo fishing spots. Works good also if lost in the woods and can't seem to find a bar. Can order up to date maps/chips to put in. I am happy with it.

I use to be a pro with a compass and a map. So I also carry those with also just in case I break the little GPS wonder. The rechargable batteries seem to last a good long time I carry an extra set fully recharged and a charger. I have recharged my batteries in bars and diners and the good ol hotel room. Its a fast charger and has them cooked before I get off the pot.

Like I said...This unit is portable and can be used pretty much anywhere.

The only draw backs are the maps/chips you purchase can get out to date pretty fast. But hey....I figure most Key land formations and major highways are around for a long time. Not to many problems with this guy to get a good sense of direction.

For about $250 I went with a Garmin 750 Nuvi. I got it at Sams for under 200 bucks and picked up a mount ($43) for the bike....Works fine in the cage and the bike....Just ain't water proof.....The mount was made by Ram...but I still carry a map (old habits).

The one HD is selling is the Zumo 550 - I have had one for over a year and wouldn't trade it. YOu can find them for less money if you do a little shopping..... I paid less the $700.00 for mine when I bought - then the going price was $850.00 - Not sure what the Harley price is....
