Hi guys. I have been wanting to get a louder horn but had not pulled the trigger yet as I was not sure which to get and did not really have the funds with the current economic situation. So a friend of mine had a siren laying around that another friend gave him. I mentioned that I might like to put it on my bike if he is not going to use it. Low and behold I am given this beatiful chrome siren to put on.
I think it was about $60 off of ebay. Simple install. It bolted right up to the horn bracket and wired right in. Black to black and red to the black and yellow wire. It is LOUD. If I can now just keep myself from hitting it when there is an officer of the law around I should be fine. I know this is a lot less expensive than the top of the line air horns, although there are some inexpensive ones that are pretty good too.
I can't for the life of me think that doing that is in any way legal. I could be wrong, but I would think that the police will be on you like Oprah on a canned ham when you reveal your new option.
I can't see that being legal either. However, a friend of mine bought an ex-police Crown Victoria and talked the guy into leaving the flashing lights behind the grill operable and if he saw someone he knew he'd roll in behind them and light them up. What fun
It's always funny when someone else does the crime and you can sit back and enjoy them getting in trouble. lol
Yeah, I had a friend that used to run some lights that gave the impression he was a cop. Problem is he flashed them at someone to make them pull over so he could pass them and it turned out the car was driven by an undercover cop. The guy got in some major trouble and had his car impounded not to mention his butt was thrown in jail. Seems the judge didn't think it was funny either. I don't remember all the crap he had to go through but it turned him sour on fixing his car up that way again. I bumped into him a few years after the bust and asked him about it, but he said he didn't want to talk about it. Guess it was a sore point of conversation to him.
I try not to give the cops any additional reasons to pull me over. They have more than enough already.
Being retired from law enforcement I can assure you, at least in CO you can't run any emergency vehicle equipment on your POV unless you are a member of a recognized rescue group or a volunteer firefighter. I volunteered for 5 years as a Fire/Medic with local fire department. I would always stop at accidents or if I saw one on the other side of the highway I would run the lights and music to get to the accident. But I always had ID authorizing me to have this equipment. If I were a cop and caught you running a siren, I would throw the book at you with every charge I could think of. People that are not trained to use this equipment properly can get into serious problems or cause other people problems. So what if you are running this siren and some fool jerks their wheel to the right to get out of your way and they hit another vehicle or run someone over? People don't act or react like you would expect them to when they see lights or hear sirens. Even if you were not using it, it would give me problable cause to detain you while I ran you, your plates, and VINS. That big siren would be pretty hard to hide. You could try and convince someone that it was just a really big air cleaner. And depending on the officer's mood, they could make you take it off right then and there or impound your bike for you. So you have to ask yourself is it worth it?
