Default Winter Fuel Prep

If you are living anywhere that gets as cold and rider unfriendly as we do here in Connecticut, you might want to remember to add some fuel stabilizer to your gas tank and let the bike run long enough to get some of that stabilized fuel through your petcock, fuel line and into the carb bowl.

Sure beats having to clean and rebuild the carb in the Spring when you really want to be riding.

You have a brand you recommend, or are they all pretty much the same?

It is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the LORD.

My friends swear by Sea Foam... I don't have personal experience with it, except for putting some in for storage this year. The other brand that was recommended was Stabil - all said not to skimp on cheaper product, and buy either one!

I live in the midwest and have used Stabil for many years with excellent results.

I've always used stabil. That's interesting about the sea-foam. Used that before to remove carbon, and it does great...except for the cloud of smoke.

Do not get Stabil on your paint. It will eat through your clear coat and more if you dont catch it. Yes I was a victim. Botz

As I read your post, Botz, I thought it sounded like 1st hand experience.

After adding the stabil, I ride around a bit, then head home. Almost home, I'll turn the petcock off and try to run the fuel out of the float bowl as well. I've done this since '94, I've only been in the carb to add the dynojet stuff.

Ditto 94 except i don't run the fuel out of the bowl and have never had a problem. And BlueBob don't buy your stabil at the dealer, go to Wal-mart [shame on me], it's alot cheaper!

Hey 94,

I follow the exact same protocol as you. Top off tank adding Stabil, ride around, close petcock and run dry. I usually ride all winter so I dont winterize every year. Only when I had two bikes and the years when I get run over and cant ride...lol. Here's how I screwed up. Topped off tank on side stand. Rode around briefly, shut petcock, ran dry. Jacked bike up off ground on motorcycle lift taking weight off suspension. As I did this bike straightened up and fuel shifted in tank slowly overflowing out fuel cap. I covered bike and that was that. Next day smelled fuel and took off cover. Apparently, fuel was seeping out of fuel cap slowly all night. I was lucky and only the clear was ruined. Yeah...i was ticked off. Hopefully this moment of stupidity will help someone else avoid same problem. Botz
