Default Fuel leaking from tank 03 Heriage

Last night on the way home I topped off my fuel tank on my 2003 Heritage. I have only had this bike for about 3 weeks and never filled it up before. Today when I went out to the garage there were a few drips of fuel under the bike. After closer investigation I could see a small amount of fuel ( a few drops) coming out from under the speedometer housing on top of the tank. Did I over fill it or is there some kind of seal or something leaking?

If you didnt spill a bit when filling you very well could filled it a little high. Cap may have leaked a bit. Clean it up and keep an eye on it.

Get down under the bike and look just above your drips of gas. If you see the end of your gas tanks vent hose then you just overfilled it. Let us know how you make out.

Sorry it took so long to get back.(I just want to ride) After 2,000 miles I think I have it figured out. One inch below the filler neck is ok if I'm riding or if the bike is straight up. But if I'm going to park it on the side stand I need to stop filling about two inches from the top. No more problems. Now my next challenge is my first oil change.

Should be able to fill it up and put it on the side stand without it leaking,,sounds like there is a problem.

Just get the right oil filter wrench. you need a special one to clear the crank position sensor.

So where is it coming out from. Under the cap? Your kickstand F-'d as to where you are leaning to far over when parked?

A few drips leak out from under the chrome speedometer housing on top of the tank. If I park it over night it will run down the side of the tank and drip on a spot on the ground the size of a quarter. Not a lot but it sure makes a stink.

You should not have any fuel leakage at all, Rockengramps. It is obvious that the gasket at the top of the tank isn't sealing, if you bought the bike from a dealer it is his responsibility to fix it, take it to him.
If you haven't bought the factory manual for your bike, now is the time to get one. As hdnt1550 said, get the right oil filter wrench so you clear the crankshaft position sensor. I bought a real nice billet one at the dealer, made by "Billet in USA".

Thumbs up

Welcome,Gramps
But,find & fix the leak,buddy. Any gas and/or fumes (especially fumes) coming from under your dash (or wherever) is NOT a good thing. There's elec.switches & connectors etc.,in there...they could spark...spark = ignition............................""....... ................and, that's not the only way/place a fire/explosion could occur,from it...even if you're (should'nt be necessary) leaving a 2" space when filling(?)up !!
