| | Re: EFI Controller FAQ! All right gang, go back to the start and notice the post that states that the bikes coming from the dealer are already lean.
Fattening up the mixture is where you need to start, then add either the pipes or air kit, not both, and check it again. By checking it, I mean go for a ride for 30 minutes to allow the AFV's to get adjusted to the change.
If all is well after this ride, add the next item to the mix. Do the ride again and check.
You may or may not need to tune the system with some of the software that is out there, be it SERT, TTS, DynoJet or whatever.
Yes, the system adaptive but it is not forgiving. Once the damage is done from lean running conditions and detonation, it may be too late. |

| | Re: EFI Controller FAQ! This may be our solution right here: Nightrider.com Performance Parts
About 2/3's of the way down the page, LC1 WBO2 Kit for Harley-Davidson Wide Band O2 sensor upgrade for H-D motorcycles.
Discussing this with a buddy of mine who is a mechanic, he broke O2 sensors down to me in a manner where I could understand what he was saying. He basically said that "2 wire" narrow band O2 sensors are very limited in their ability to self adjust, which is what comes stock on our bikes. He said "3 wire" wide band O2 sensors have more room for self adjustment and may not completely solve the problem, but will even things out a bit more than the stock ones. Now obviously we can't just go out and buy any wideband O2 sensors and tada it'll solve our problem.

| | Re: EFI Controller FAQ! The Thundermax with Autotune has wide band (I believe Bosch like a VW) O2 sensors and you can plug it in to your computer at home and tell it to do whatever you want it to. Power, economy, rich, lean, advanced, retarded or all of the above. Expensive? Yes. When you trade your scooter off, take the Tmax with you. And customer support is second to none. |

A 2006 huh. I doubt that they remapped(Down Loaded) it for you. The wrenches at the stealerships were still trying to get a grasp on EFI back then. Usally the rider had to make the effort and ask for it to be done |

| | Re: EFI Controller FAQ! shedds- First off welcome to site...I hope you enjoy it here and stick around! Lots of good folks on here.
I don't want to insult your intelligence here, but do you have an EFI controller on your bike? If so what brand is it? If you don't the dealer may have simply done a stage I download to your ECM. I am by no means an expert on this and couldn't tell you what the Stage I download does. However, if you haven't done so I'd call Manchester HD with the VIN handy and talk to someone in the tech dept. If it was all done there they should be able to tell what they did to the bike and when it was done.
As for the popping on decel and the "louder pop" (backfiring) welcome to the club. I've come to learn real quick when I experience a backfire it has more to do with with air temp and the amount of moisture of in the air than anything else.
Another thing I've noticed and has actually gotten rid of my popping on decel is higher octane gas. In CA all I was ever able to find was 91 octane, while in MS I can find 93 octane just about anywhere. Is that the answer to my problems? I don't for sure, hell I may be way off here on both, but these are just from observations.
Just another thing I'll throw out there for everyone, I have the Stage I air cleaner on my bike and for the longest time ran that big ugly stock A/C cover over it. The bike would get really hot and seemed to have a helluva time breathing. I took that thing off and run straight air filter now (as many do). Man what a difference in idle, bike temp and just over all breathing capability. Plus I like the "hot rod" look it gives it.

| | Re: EFI Controller FAQ! New to this site so here goes. Recently got an 03 ultra classic that came with V&H slip on ovals, and screaming eagle stage 1 kit, and no after market controller. Also have 87 Heritage, and am used to it's occasional quirks. Once I started putting miles on the 03, noticed that after warmup and in the area of 2k rpm's it would cough through the air intake, and a lot of popping through the pipes. The coughing is driving me nuts, happens at the worst times. Everyone is telling me that this is a lean issue and an after market efi controller should take care of this. The question is which one, I want to make sure it will do the job before I spend the money. From what I read, I'm thinking ThunderMax closed loop. Anyone have any experiences with this?
In the mean time, riding the 87. | | | | Tags | air, big shot, big sucker, dyno, dynojet, efi, efi controller, exhaust, fi2000, fuel, fuelpak, hypercharger, oxygen, oxygen sensor, pciii, power commander, screamin' eagle, sensor, tuned, tuning, twin tec, zippers | |
