Thanks Mike and HardTime. I did check the archives, and you're right, things are pretty polarized on the two manufacturers. I'm not sure how I feel about going back to a butterfly carb like S&S...but the S&S looks like a simpler installation and less $$$. In addition to being more expensive, Mikuni wants new throttle cables, too. I am pretty conflicted here... I am considering a CV Keihn and doing either a Yost or Thunder jet upgrade, too. Maybe one of my buddies still has a Keihn hanging around from the 90s. That may be the smart money.

For what it's worth, I've removed one "loop" from the return spring on many S&S Shorties for a lighter throttle feel. My own bike has a single cable internal throttle and the [modified] spring is still plenty strong enough for a consistent and reliable return to idle.

I hesitate to recommend throttle modifications online because I have no oversight of their application, but I never, ever use more than one throttle cable on any bike, regardless of year, model or which carb or throttle body it has. The only time you need two cables is when you ignore maintenance to the point where the main cable rusts solid.

Todd, thanks for the suggestion. I actually have kicked around the idea of taking a wrap off the spring, but I would only do that if I could source a replacement spring. If I can't make the HS40 work for my wife, it will be on the block for sale.
