Can't help wondering if anyone has thought of the rider safety standpoint on these "new" regs.
After having ridden an '81 ironhead Sportster for several years; I went to a '93 Sportster and later a 2002 Low Rider. Both of the last two HAD to be rejetted just to get the damn things to quit stumbling, or sometimes dying when taking off from a standstill. If this happens with an inexperienced rider or in traffic; it could cause a guy to get hit, or fall. Somehow, though, I don't think the EPA would really care!

Hello ALL. I’m new to the AIM Forum, but subscribe to the mag. I think this AIM Forum is great and glad to see the EPA section. It’s a good tool for communicating up dates and issues on this topic. I fear this EPA stuff is really going to get rough on us.

Personally I can deal with the Emissions Standards testing to some extent. What irritates me most is the enforcement on exhaust noise levels. I often ride to New Hope, Pennsylvania for lunch and buy an item or two at their local shops. Hundreds of other riders do the same every weekend in this beautiful Historic town.

The local Police patrol the main street on bicycles. For the past two years, they have pulled over riders and tested their exhaust dB levels and issue a summons. Last week I witnessed two riders pulled over, tested, and failed the EPA Noise Reg. They were just cruising past me at 5 MPH. I was standing on the sidewalk when they rode by. I asked them what their readings were. One bike tested at 86 dB and the other 90 dB. Both the Harley Softail & Dyna did not have a tachometer on the bike. Both bikes had the typical aftermarket exhaust with baffles installed. I guess at this time, ALL aftermarket pipes do not pass the EPA sound levels. Including my 4” V&H Road King touring slip-ons.

I believe the local PD authorities will now use this EPA Reg. in order to keep motorcyclists out of their towns, for fear of getting a summons because of this EPA noise ordinance. I’ve read that possibly ??, the EPA may include, that each subsequent summons against you for exhaust noise, the fines increase $$ !!. This is to deter those who are willing to pay the first fine and leave the pipes on the bike.

Seems as though the motorcyclists all get a “thumbs up, a smile and a wave” when we gather for a ‘charity event’ to help raise funds for MDA, Cancer Foundation, Sept. 11 Memorial, Wounded Soldiers returning from war, Rolling Thunder support for the MIA-POW, etc, etc.

Now we’re being targeted for excessive exhaust noise, on the same machines we use to help out and raise $$$ for charity and express our America Freedom. Hypocritical actions if you ask me !!! The next hammer to fall on us will be enforcement of DOT helmets and mandatory seat belts on all motorcycles.

Hold on tight, I fear we’re in for some rough road conditions ahead with the EPA.

Be safe out on the road…

Hi Hawci
We've been dealing with this sort of crap for many years and I've said for just as long that wherever this happens the sickle community at large en mass should agree to never do business of any kind in that place...
Up to now it has lways fallen on deaf ears..Unfortunately many of these places are "the place to be seen" and the sicklists would rather take the screwin...
BTW,, welcome...

After reading all the posts here, I have to pipe in. (no pun intended)
The noise issue has been ongoing within most cities and towns for over 15 years.
So much so that the complaints to local governments finally gave way to laws. First local ords and regs, then to state laws.
The only agency at the fed level charged with regulating this area is the EPA.
Thats when they started looking at motorcycles overall.
As the EU was already on record for monitoring emissions, the US followed suite.
It is not the emission requirements that is hurting the H-D models, it is the engine design.

EU is just Hitler's wet dream fulfilled, and a not democratic at all, just pan-european faschist ruled organization which should be scrapped asap.

EU is just a money wasting colossus and a EU delegate swallows a monthly salary of approx 15.000 USD, which is a great waste with our taxmoney.
