| | 2006 EPA Rules I read in American Iron that in 2006, Harley Dealers will not be allowed to work on bikes that have been "modified" or they will bw fined by the EPA. Is this true? Posted by: twincam95 on Oct 7, 05 11:24:58 am |

| | I've heard this to.....but by my observance of cycles over the years I can venture a guess that NO ONE is going to get service done. Posted by: Dennis on Oct 21, 05 9:01:50 am |

| | Alas, it is true. If you don't believe me just pick up a copy of the Januaruy issue of American Iron Mag -- when it hits.
There it will be, right on the cover and in-depth inside. Read it and weep. Or better yet, read it and get active. Do something to join the grass roots campaign against the new EPA rules. YEAH!!!! Posted by: SamW on Oct 27, 05 1:42:53 pm |

| | For those that are AMA members..this is where our AMA membership dues should be applied..toward lobbying Congress to impress them that there is a huge riding bloc of voters out here. It is nonsense...motorcyclists are being singled out, in my opinion. To expand on chris114's thoughts, every car and truck manufacturer has its own factory performance product line..to say nothing of the huge after-market business. Are they affected by these same EPA rules? Posted by: retired_colonel on Nov 2, 05 3:50:33 pm |

| | I read the new law several months ago in a couple diff publications, scary stuff huh...
Well, we all have the enviromental nazi's, the eco-freaks, and the liberals that cow tow to them,,, oh, and of course the weak-kneed republicans that don't have the patriotic balls to stand up to them to thank..!!
I don't remember exactly who, but good conservative lawmakers have tried over the last few years to get passed some common-sense environmental laws passed but lost because the tree huggers, pinko-commie liberals and the liberal press oppose them rabidly...
jeeeze, my memory sucks sometimes, but I've read a few times that Harley was also behind alot of these new laws because they want to stifle competition,,, for many years I've built my own Harley's with very few HD parts, I have no use for HD...
In a way this could backfire, it could get most of the HD riders to learn to work on their bikes again like it used to be, you don't need HD... If you know which end of a wrench to hold you can do it yourself, screw HD,,, yeah baby...
The new law taking effect on 1-1-2006 is what encouraged me to order two new frames and get 2 bikes built before the end arrives, then I'll still be able to build that ONE last bike of a lifetime at some time in the future...
You guys better get busy and either build em and/or learn to work on em... Posted by: frisco-rigid on Nov 3, 05 1:14:05 am |

| | Hey Frisco,
Good to hear from you again. I'm right there with you. What frames did you order? I'm trying to pick mine out. Don't know if I want to do a chopper, a pro street, or a bobber... Posted by: tfrock on Nov 4, 05 4:45:17 pm |

| | This time I ordered Rolling Thunder... rollingthunderframes.com
Look at all the features on the build your bike page and watch the price change as you change the options, good site...
Something I forgot to tell you before, if you go with one of those wide tires, whatever frame you get I think you should specify that you want the motor and tranny mounts to be installed in the stock-OEM position, otherwise if they are off-set to the left it will throw your center balance off... To make up for the OEM stock position mounts you get the appropriate off-set tranny plate, the tranny being off-set won't hardly effect you, then you get the corresponding inner primary-to-motor spacer and you're good to go, dunnit a bunch, works fine...
Here's a hint---- get your stuff, throw the bike together, don't worry about shimming and fit, hell don't even paint the frame, only do what you know they're going to look for, for instance a working horn, trailer it down to the inspection site, have your receipts and paper work ready,,, get it registered in 05, yeah baby,, then take it home take it apart and do all the correct fitting and building at your leisure... That's what I'm doing with these 2, I'm using the same parts on the second one, just thrown together, of course the frames, motors and trannys will be diff, but then I can take my time building em after I get em registered in 05... | | What gets me is that when the EPA tried this crap with the car enthusiasts virtually every aftermarket parts maker, car mag and club banded together and got things changed. Why aren't the bike mags, makers, aftermarket parts maker, clubs, et al, doing the same?
While I see ABATE still fighting helmet laws its going to be a moot point if they slowly write bikes out of existance, and I don't see any ads in any mags saying "Write your representatives in DC" anywhere. Not from the AMA, not from one bike rag, not in one ad from a parts maker. Posted by: Majicbringer on Nov 17, 05 4:57:26 pm |

| | frisco-rigid, If the states register bikes by frame #, does the motorcycle have to be registered before '06 to beat the deadline. I thought these rules only affected motorcycles manufactured for the '06 years and later. If your frame and engine predates '06, then would'nt the bike qualify as being exempt? I am confused.
