How's this one sound folks...just stopped by a Harley Dealer with a friend of mine who has had some mild mods done on his '05 Road King. (All Screaming Eagle parts) When we went back to service some of the guys that work there asked if he wanted to do some more work because they were using up the last stock of Screaming Eagle parts they had on hand and were not ordering anymore (by direction of H.D.) so if he wanted to he had better get hot. Also, they there were not doing and performance upgrades to anything '06 and newer. This is in the midwest, Indiana to be specific. Anyone else here of this going on anywhere else or have any info?
Maddog, do i have some info for you! ! ! I'm from New England and I've hit a 1/2 doz. dealers in my area just to pick their brains. One dealer said that they can only put screaming eagle mufflers (cats}, on the 06 bikes but that they are still installing aftermarket parts on the 05 bikes until they hear something more definitive from the motor co. Another dealer said what they might do is let the customer put the parts on, then they could bring it back and we'll "TUNE" it for you. Want to hear another shocker? Another dealer said that there has been talk about doing away with the screaming eagle line of bikes! Whats bulls@*t and what's not? You got me by the short hairs! ! !
Here's some more info...Today I received a supplement to HD's large accessory catalog and they still show Screamin Eagle mufflers and have them flagged as they used to do in the past.
Some are marked with a green light symbol stating they are 50 state legal; some are marked with a stop-hand signifying 49 state legal; and some are marked with crossed flags and noted to be for closed track use.
Both the stop-hand and the crossed flag items are noted to be "not for use in California"
This would indicate that the stop-hand items are OK for 49 state use. It also mentions that the green light and stop-hand items are EPA legal in their respective state(s)
Doesn't sound like HD has any plans to discontinue Screamin Eagle anytime soon.
I DID notice that they no longer offer jet kits for carbuereted bikes; so I assume those of us without EFI are on our own if we need jets.
jmk,if you noticed in the supplement the screamin eagle mufflers for the o6's are cats. If you get the 06 screamin eagle pro parts catalog you'll see that it has all the parts that the regular catalog used to have including the jet kits. If it's individual jets that someone needs they can refer back to an old catalog and probably still get them or they can just go to an after market catalog. In my opinion any part that has anything other than the crossed flags has been compromised as far as performance is concerned.
MTY
I Think you're right about the compromised parts.
The more I read on this stuff makes me glad I bought in 2002 instead of waiting till a later year.
Still I gotta wonder just how far "they" will go with this and if the MRF will have any luck in bargaining down the restrictions. I'd really hate to have to go back to a stock set-up with all the spitting and sputtering...damn thing was borderline dangerous to ride that way, especially in stop and go traffic. Just have to keep up with what's being done and do what we, as riders, can.
I don't know if anthing other than the crossed flags will always mean a compromised part. I do think that HD will have a hard time inventing new generation performance on their own, especially if there are no other aftermarket companies. GM, Ford, and Chrysler pulled through the 80's after some big losses in performance and then found more performance in today than was ever possible in the past. One thing is for sure, things are changing.
captain, I believe HD is going to have a hard time surviving unless they go to an overhead cam, watercooled engine. If they do they will just become another motorcycle manufacturer and that special place in the motorcycle world will be gone and i don't think that they could survive that. Look at the v-rod, sales haven't been what they would have you believe. Just think what GM, Ford and Chrysler could have done if it wasn't for the EPA!
Wow, very good points, we have a bunch of really good thinkers on this forum...
Also, just think what "all of us" regular folk could have done if it wasn't for the pinko-commie EPA... We sure shouldn't have to be frettin about more Gov. intervention, restrictive rules, and regulations...
Here's an update on this issue of Screaming Eagle or No Screaming Eagle.....Got a bit more clarification from the same dealer (service) here in Indiana. Harley will discontinue manufacture and sale of ALL Screaming Eagle Performance Parts in April. This dealer (service) also said that his parts person is in the process of putting a huge order for Screaming Eagle Parts now and that when they are gone......however they will still install aftermarket and/or Screaming Eagle Parts (if you can find them) on anything you want. Now, other dealers aren't doing anything on '06 models and aren't doing anything on anything.
What in hell......? Is that some nazi ideals at The Motor Company???? What are they scared for? That people will make things for themselves??? People have tuned their bikes since ages, so why will they try to stop it now? They will not go winning out of this.
