The form in the Feb. and March issues is to be mailed to the Motorycle Riders Foundation (MRF). (The address is at the bottom of the form.) They are going to use the info from the forms, as well as the number they get, to show the EPA what impact the new EPA regs, as they are presently written, will have on the industry and individual owners.
The EPA is willing to listen to alternative ways to achieve its goals, while not impact motorcycling in a negative way, at this time. It has set 2006 as the year it will evaluate the success, cost, and consumer acceptance of the new regs. This is why these forms are so important. They prove to the EPA what the MRF has been saying for the last few years. Hopefully, they will be able to get a few more exemptions included into the new regs. The MRF was the ones who got the one-bike-for-life and 24 bikes per shop exemptions into the rules.
However, it's important to remember that we do not want to set up an US vs. Them mentality between any of the players in this ongoing debate. H-D, the MIC, the MRF, and the EPA should not be singled out for hate mail. Each is working to take care of its interests, which is just what local shops and owners need to do. The MIC is doing its job, watching out for its members and the big bike builders. The MRF is a grassroots organization that is taking the needs of the small shop and private individual to the EPA. They need your support. Download the form from this site, make lots of copies, and pass them out to your friends who ride and the local shops.
