...am amazed that anyone can identify today's conservative as one who upholds "true" conservative values. A quick glance at current domestic and international policy is all one needs to see that conservatism is dead, an opinion shared not only by myself, but other much more well-known and respected traditional conservatives (e.g., George Will, Pat Buchanan, etc.)....

FWIW....

conservative or ???...

there is one potentially ambiguous thought about corn ethanol for fuel. folks all over the world are starting to see that they need our food way more than we need there oil.

every gallon of ethanol in a car, bike, whatever is about two gallons of corn that wont leave the country and a gallon of oil we dont have to buy from folks who proclaim they hate us. think about all the food we ship overseas and where it all goes. we can use it here to fuel our cars and they can possibly figure out how to make food with all that oil. over time ethanol will change the equation.

the real question is this - is this a good thing or a bad thing - as for me, i do not know.

I'm sorry but I am not in the market to buy a new bike and new truck just because of fuel changes and I don't know how either would adjust to 20% ethanol.

Ethanol costs MORE than gasoline to refine as you need deisel to power pretty much everything that's needed to get it to market. Then after all that it only gives you 2/3 of the HP and MPG of straight gas. On top of that, the congressional mandates about how much ethanol has to be in gas these day has made the price of anything that needs corn to make it or feed it - from beef and chicken to cereal - to rise. On top of that, since more farmers are planting corn, and not wheat, the price of wheat has skyrocketed, so more money for donuts and bread. And all those products require more deisel. So the cost of deisel goes up do to increased demand for ethanol, wheat, and corn...
It's outta control when I have to pay $12 to fill a 3.3gal Sporty tank!

Ooh Man,,,, Go majic Go..
You showed some passion baby..!!
Yup, this corn alc. thing has some serious problems..

And what pisses me off royally is we're sitting on our own oil reserves in ANWAR and off the coasts and dang I cannot remember where else, but the damn Pinko Democrats won't allow the drilling.. Jeeeeze..

The original estimates at ANWAR were 30 years of oil at present rate of usage.. The Nay-sayers say there is only 5 years at present usage..
Well, you know, wouldn't it be swell to have even 5 years of our own oil to help us get ready for all the "possible" alternative fuels..
I say drill for our own oil WHEREVER it is found..

Pay more for Doughnuts?????? Hell no..!!

frisco, your preaching to the choir here! I spent the last 10 years in the oil/gas industries. If the Dems had their way millions of people including myself would be unemployed. I say drill baby drill.

Well the answer is this... It is always politics at the bottom of all that is done to us in America...
It's the Liberals, the Democrats that brought you/us the over restrictive un-American pinko-commie EPA laws...
Yes, many Republicans have jumped on board that road to the Left but it is the Democrats/Liberals that want more oil-based restrictions on US...

Until the citizens of America wake up and SEE who is screwing them and do something about it by voting Conservative it's just gonna get worse...

Scream baby scream...
You are correct, sir!! The trouble is no one wants to believe that the governing body of this great land would do such a thing. Well wake up!! We are being sold down the pike by the people who are to be representing us. We are back to "Extermely high taxes without competent Representation" We have come full circle. We have enough oil of our own we do not need any foregin oil. Like someone else said they need our food more than we need their oil. Too bad our government is paying farmers not to farm. ????? The Conservatives and Liberals need to do the will of the people. Trouble is you can't tell the difference.

I dont see Ethanol going full blown. It was a good Idea not thought out. The cost and so forth may not be worth it. Cargill put the "Cancel" on a Etnanol plant they were going to build. I think this fad may just disapear in a few years.

There's a company out there now that is developing what it called a "gas bug".They can take high carbon thing, like old tires (and pretty much anything else since most life is carbon based), bake them a bit to release teh carbon, and these bacteria eat it and give off gasoline (another similar thing gives off ethanol) as a waste product. Not onlt that, but the gasoline that it gives off has low emissions. No need to convert anything for alcohol. They're estimating that they can have a refinery making 100 million gallons a year by 2011. If someone in the powers that be could divert some earmark money into something good, that could probably be done inside 2 years. Then someone needs to tell everyone that it IS going to be in someone's back yard, live with it.
No more OPEC having us by the short 'n curlies, skies get cleaner, jobs, we can afford food again, it won't cost the better part of a Jackson to fill a bike tank.

I need a job. Willing to work as a lobbiest for this... LOL
