Default Voltage Regulator Problems

I have a 2000 Fatboy twin-cam with extensive engine mods. (Big-bore cylinders, stroker kit [113 ci], .630 cams, hemi heads with Dave Mackie Engineering "Megasphere" mods, oversize valves, Mikuni 48 mm carb). It's now on its fourth voltage regulator. The local Harley shop, which is normally quite good on maintenance, can't figure it out. Anybody have an idea as to what is going on? Engine vibration? Overheating due to a chrome decorative cover over the regulator? The bike runs sweet and I normally take very long rides in it, but last week the regulator went again during a 4,000 mile ride, very far from home! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using the same brand regulator each time? Have you checked to see what the stator's output is? Never had any problems with the chrome cover and heat. Unless something is shorting, I don't know what to tell ya, except good luck. Maybe an intermitent problem, like a wire rubbing.
