Default Pushroads and S&S 510G cam

Eng type is a 2003 TC88B: Need something cleared up. To start with I am getting ready to change over to S&S 510G Cams. I was going to use S&S adjustable pushrod 7/16 in APRHD1 Chrome Item (# F-49140) with the 510G gear kit (# F-49107). I am not going to make any other mods. I have been visiting many different sites, and reading up on problems others have had, hoping to make the task as easy as possible. Came across this one today, and it made me think. The problem this person had was lots of tappet noise. He states that he has two different installation procedures, one informs him that he does not need the HL2T lifter kit, and another states that any TC88 engine after 1986 does require the HL2T kit. He used the stock lifters. My question is do I have to use the HL2T lifter kit, or can I keep the stock lifters. I am not looking to build the eng up, I am happy with the way it is. I just want to get rid of the chain drive and go to gears. Just want to thank everyone who has responded to my request, I know I can do the job but it is always a little frightening for me when working on anything to do with timing. Your inputs are greatly appreciated. THANKS His problem was he had no oil pressure, he had installed the washer backwards on the backside of the oil pump.

It's odd that the procedure says TC88 engine after 1986. The TC88A came out in 1999 and TC88B in 2000. I try to keep from stepping over my bounds by giving advice on something I don't know from experience about but from what I understand you can use stock lifters with 510 gear set. I'm sure we have some cam experts that can advise you better. Sorry I was not more help.

I think part of the instructions didn't make it to the post... it probabaly says...EVOS AND twin cams '86 and later, I know the hl2t kit fits both lifters. You won't be running up the rpms, so you most likely won't need the kit. I would replace the lifters, though.

I did exactly what you are doing, no noisey lifters, but I had replaced the oil pump. I have heard of this type of noise from others, though. One other thing, there's a different pushrod tube you should use... I think it's evo pushrod tubes. The reason is they are shorter, and make it easier to access the adjustment. This is something I have heard from others. Havn't tried it yet, but I will. Maybe someone can confirm this, or correct me if I'm wrong.

Good luck, you'll like the results. Oh, and the 510g cams are bolt in. You can opt for better hardware, but you don't NEED to. They will work just fine with stock hardware.

Yes you will need to use shorter pushrod tube lowers and correspondingly longer pushrod tube clips. Many catalog Co's sell this as a kit. They do seem alot like EVO lower tubes but I believe that the clip length for EVO's would be wrong for a Twin Cam, so a kit would be in order.
The HL2T inserts are for high rpm (7000+) and or high lift (0.650" + )/ high strength valve springs applications.
They would be very noisy in your application. Use your stock lifters or treat the cams right and replace your lifters with new ones for stock application use.
New cams, new lifters, new pushrods and all will be happy and last longer that if you used worn parts in the mix.
