Question Top End

I have an 06 FLHT. After recieving a price to do my top & bottom end, I've decided to do the top myself to try and save a little money. I have 95" cylinder's, flat top pistons & performance heads. These are all Harley parts. I have aready done my exhaust & a Stage 1 kit for air flow. In the bottom end I plan on using 251 cams, perfect fit pushrods & a 6200 rpm ignition. My question is can I do the top now & bottom later with out any negitive on the motor? I was not planning on re-jetting the carb. Is this nessesary?
Thanks
Rick

Whats the Millage on the bike? Low miles should not be a problem. How much later do you plan to catch up with the bottem end? It would be easier to do both at once since the top is being torn down. Why are you doing it seperate?

The bike has about 7800 miles. I'm doing the top & bottom seperate because of the cost. I have already purchased the heads & cylinders, so with pistons & gaskets I figure I can finish the top for around $300.00. I plan on having my local shop do the bottom next winter. My concern is if I may have a timing issue or if I need to rejet the carb at this time. Thanks for any advice.

Default Top end

You should rejet even without the mods. The bike comes lean for EPA compliance. It is easy to do. Jets are cheap and with the changes you are making you can not afford to go lean. Slightly rich will run cooler and last longer.

Get some help with parts selection. Either here or from a wrench you can trust. Cam selection and compression change everything. Think about what you are looking for and how you ride. I am a torque nut and live in the 0 to 65. The changes to my bike may not be right for you.

If you have done the breather and pipes definitely get to know your carb and learn to read your spark plugs.

I know near nothing about EFI. I may own one someday. Keihn low speed jets are $2.99 from J&P and for now I will remain a dinosaur.

Reading the plugs sounds like good common sense advice. Thanks

Red face

Richard, your bike came from the factory running lean, and after you chanced the pipes and air filter it was running even leaner(more air same gas). if you can change the top end you can do the carb mod. you are going to have the carb off when changing the cylinders anyway. get her done.

Should not be a problem. Can do the bottom later when more funds become available.

Cool

With that combination which is 10:1 you will have detonation problems with your bike, which will be even worse without the cam change. You will need to get an adjustable ignition module to prevent engine damage.I would go up 5 jet sizes to start with as a base line and increase the pilot as well.
