Default 96 to 103, Dealer or Custom Shop

I have been thinking about adding a little kick to the new TC96 by adding a big bore kit. I have heard that the SE parts are not very good and recently talked to the owner at Iron Thunder Cycles in Raleigh about having them do the motor work. Their prices are in line with the stealer's but the parts are not SE and would void the warranty. The bike is a 2008 with 18 months left on the warranty and I am hesistating only because it would void the factory warranty. Any thoughts?

I consider the motorcycle to be a hobby. A toy if you will. If you can afford to play with your toy, then go for it. But if you're still making payments on it, then leave it stock until the warranty is done, or you pay off the bike, or both.

You don't want to make payments on a modified bike that's broken in pieces......worst case scenerio.

I don't think SE parts are junk in fact I would go with one of the street legal kits that should not void your warranty and give you some power increases. Then later you can go hog wild and make a real road burner and re use alot of the parts depending how far you want to go.

Have your dealer do the work and if you can wait till winter. Most shops will offer free pickup and delivery and even give you a break on labor.

Then you can have the best of both worlds a bike with more power and a warranty.

I went with a SE 103 big bore, it just whetted my appetite for HP and TQ, put in the HQ 500 cams turning a little over 100/100 hp tq. Thinking about changing out to the larger HQ kit with heads and 575 cams.

Mastblaster, did you have the work done at the dealer? Are you happy with the upgrade?

I did the 103 upgrade on delivery and am so-so happy with the power it's definitley better than stock. I also did the pipes and race tuner but without doing the heads I am only getting 88 hp and 102 fps of torque on the dyno. As I have already had an engine blow on my 2004 I am a huge fan of warrantees. I guess the bottom line is, it's your call.

Just to rub some salt in your wounds, bone stock I'm putting 110hp to the street. With my modest investment in my motor, I hope to be putting 140hp to the rear wheel. I'd like to be running low to mid 10's by this time next year in the quarter mile

I have Stage 11 big bore kit 255 cams and under warranty. The bottom line is that these kits have been tested on HD's the others why its a gamble in my opinion. I have close to 10k on my build and happy with it. Will I go diffrent in the future probably. If you mix and match diffrent parts you could be doing yourself and engine harm if not done by a qualified wrench. If something goes wrong at least you can get it fixed by HD the company rather than Jack the wrench. Its just my opinion and like all say (well you know).
