Default twin cam head and cam ?

Hi I have been reading about the camchain tensioner on the 05 88's. It sounds like the tensioners are shot at about 20000 miles. Most say that you should switch to a gear drive . I have 16000 on my 05 ultra now and am trying to decide what cam to go with. would I just be wasting my time and money with new chain and tensioners? I know that the heads are very restricted. I don't know if I will go with a 95" or not at this time but I will be doing cam and something to my head. I have seen some screamin eagle heads on ebay would I be better off with some of these heads or other aftermarket. can you make the stock heads flow the same or not. also I dont want to go to big on the heads if I stay with 88" but I do plan on going bigger in the future.

Default Heads

Hey Untamed,

Do you have a carb or efi ? Mods on an efi bike are a bit more expensive than a carb. What kind of riding do you do the most of ? Solo or two up ? How much weight do you carry ? Do you have an idea what kind of an increase are you looking for ? How much are you thinking of spending ?

Your stock heads can be modified to outperform SE. It is possible to pull 80 to 85 hp with stock heads. I have put stock heads on a 95 ci motor . Modified heads are expensive and move peak hp into the upper rpm range depending on cam selection.

Hi I do more solo riding than double. The bike is efi I am looking for a cam that makes power is the 2200-6000 rpm I like to ride kind of hard some times. I'm looking at 100hp at some time . Not sure if I will put it up to 95" this year or not The cam tenstioner is my main concern. I don't want to put in to big of cam in. I am also looking at dropping the comp. sproket to get more bottom end. I have been riding the same old stroker shovel for years and miss the power.

Hey untamed,

I am sure even Betty Crocker has a receipe for this.
Easy method:
95 kit.
Andrews 37g
SE or Edelbrock heads.
PC lll
Adjustable push rods (optional)
Breather kit (SE ?)
Pipes. (anything but drag pipes)

Thanks for the help. I have been looking at the andrews 37g. also s&s 510 or 570. I have a ness big sucker, power commander and thunderheader 2into1 on the bike already. the heads are still up in the air. Are the screamin eagle pro twin head with .575 springs any good they say they make power to 6500? If I stay with 88" will any of the 3 cam still work. My main concern is the cams and chain. Do you now any body that has changed there comp. sproket to 21 teeth that they offer in the screamin eagle catalog. Just wondering how much high the rpms would be at 70 mph. Thanks for your help wrightturn.

Hey Untamed,

You are on your way to 100hp. In fact after the cam change you should be around 80-85. The next 15-20hp are expensive.

I will do the math on the gear change later. I have never tried a 21. I have a 24 in the garage that raises 5th gear about 500 rpm. I don`t think you will like a 21 on the interstate.

The 37g or S&S 510 are both good choices. Remember large port heads compromise port velocity. With high lift long duration cams you will be raising compression and gearing down to recover bottom end power. Expensive and not that much fun to ride. Matching heads, cams, compression will get you what you are looking for.

Bro, I put S&S .570 gear driven cams in my 88 TC. Along with a PCIIIb, Kuryakyn 'Hi-Five' Hi-flo, V&H Staggered Shorts. Turns 88HP and 87 Trq off the dyno.

Default 100 hp

Hey untamed,

Do you have a part no. for the 21 tooth ? Couldn`t find it in my SE stuff. There is a 31 (down from 34 on the new 96) but those have really different ratios.
A 570 lift cam generaly comes with more than 240 deg duration. That much duration calls for other mods to match. Big jump from a 37 or the 510. I seldom go above the 37 and have a 26 in my own bike with almost stock heads. I have plans for other mods but I am in no hurry. The bike is a Dyna still an 88. Carb rejeted , Khrome Works AR 100, SE backin plate, K&N filter, Delkron cam bearing plate, stock push rods. I am not much of a fan of dyno tuning since what I do the most of doesn`t need it. My one trip to the dyno was over 80 hp. Will I spend the money for another 10 hp ? Maybe someday but not tomorrow. Peak torque was at 3500 rpm.
I also own an 02 Flhp when I could buy them cheap. The one I kept for myself has a crank run out problem and can`t be converted to gear drive. It is a test site to see what you can blame on run out problems. So far the thing won`t break. The engine that will replace will be a 124 with reduced compression and just over 100hp. Built for reliability. If you haven`t already,go through the Andrews products web site for selection and installation info. Good stuff

Let me know

I have an 07 FLHTC and they updated the cam chain tensioners for that year. You can check as they might retrofit to the 05, probably less expensive than gear drive. I can't quote lift and duration like Wrightturn but I am using SE 255 cams and I like them for low end power. At 3000 rpm, man do they take off! It might not work for everybody but it worked for me.
