Default H-D SE 103" Stage III or IV kit

Hi. New guy here.

I have a '09 FXD. I've had several Harleys over the years and have always used Screamin' Eagle parts with satisfactory results. I'm considering going to the Screamin' Eagle 103 Stage III or IV kit listed in the H-D catalog. Is anyone using these, or can someone give me an "informed" opinion about them as to reliability, performance, etc.? The dyno charts in the H-D catalog look impressive. I feel that either kit should be a good choice since it is a complete package developed by the MoCo.

Thanks.

Mal

Welcome to the jungle zx9rmal! I am sure we have a few running this setup. Just have to wait for them to get done riding and log onto the site.

Hey Mal

You say that HD has a listing for a stage lll or stage lV kits in their catalog. The different "stages" I've seen called out by various folks seem to have different meanings to different folks so I'm not sure what you're talking about here exactly however I've read in AIM, among other sources, that HD wouldn't sell or install the EPA violating stuff to the public because they would put themselves in the position of being EPA violators and liable to fines and prosecution by the EPA. The "Stage lll and Stage lV" kits would definitely break all the rules in the EPA "book". So what I'm asking here is are you sure you can actually get your hands on this stuff? Just cuz they list the parts doesn't mean you can actually get them. And if they will sell them to you will they intstall them. I know for a fact that the local dealer I get a lot of my parts from wouldn't even consider selling that stuff to me. The owner told me so in so many words but I'm in California and here they have to worry about the California Air Resources Board (CARB) as well as the EPA.

I'm a big fan of the SE packages myself. Like you said they have done a lot of research on what works best with what. My pumped 2000 FXR4 (Evo not TwinCam) is all SE (except for the pipes and Mikuni carb) and the whole setup works really well. No flat spots, no incompatibility issues and a fairly streetable engine in the end. I especially like the SE heads. Too many of the local porting "wizards" hog out the ports too much and put in too big valves and you end up with a kind of drag bike engine that puts out a lot of power on the top end but isn't "streetable". The correct SE heads combined with the correct cam and dispacement is a nice combo in my opinion. If you can get the whole set up and have a good tech to do the work (or do it yourself if you're up to it) I'd say go for it. Of course either kit will probably void your warranty. Now if your dealer will somehow actually honor your warranty with those setups I'd say you have an exceptionally flexible dealer and should go for it. Gonna cost some serious $$$ though.

Good Luck Dude

By the way, Mal, my FXR4 even though it's only an 80"er is a serious little beast and lot of fun to ride. Over 30,000 miles on the build so far.

It's build is as follows:

SE pistons and heads
10.5:1 cr
SE pushrods
SE 57 cam
SE Ignition module
Miknuni 42 mm carb
V&H Hot Shot pipes (way loud!)
92hp at the rear wheel (when new)

I guess you would call my engine a "Stage ll" since it is stock displacement but maybe you might call it "Stage lll" because of the heads and high(er) lift cam. I dunno about that.

Hey Mal

Yup every once in awhile you hear of a dealer that won't sell or install parts other than OEM EPA compliant but don't let that slow ya down bud..

A suggestion-- do the math..

Figure out how much to modify your stock motor, then price a new HD twinky 103 that'll fit your frame..
You see---
After you get done spending a group a money on your motor, it'll be cool for sure,, but, you'll only have one motor.. And it will need another group a money spent on it to put it back to stock if the EPA nazis mandate it..

OR, buy a new bigger mill from the Co. for a little more????, install it and run baby..
When you're done you'll have 2 motors for hopefully not that much more than what it woulda taken to modify yours..
Have a ball..

I'd definitely call your setup a stage III, because of the heads. My dealer WILL do the install. The stage III & IV kits I'm referring to are actually in the H-D Screamin' Eagle Catalog, with a part number for the complete kit. The SE catalog is on the H-D website, or you can a print copy at a dealer.

I have a fairly strong running 96", but for not too much more money I could have bought a fairly strong running larger motor, and my 96" in storage in my garage. So yeah, I should have done the math. BUT, no complaints with what I have.

Default 103 se

I called phoniex AZ today and got a price on a new 103 SE motor and 6 speed transmission for my 2000 road glide. Im satisfied with the price they quated me installed. I have a race tuner on my 95 cc and its putting out morepower then the 103. The sert will be good and will need a tune with my stage 1 and thunder headers. I said I wanted 103 and not the 96 with a dealer stage 2 .
