Question Install Old Cam Gear On NEW Cam?

I used the following to change out my cam gear but have a question:

"take a 2 3/4" hose clamp and use two pins or drill bits (I use 7/64 or .109) put one on the left side of the timing tooth and one on the tooth 180 degrees. than use a straight edge and a scribe a line on the gear, do the same on the right side of the tooth. press the gear between the scribe lines to the key in the cam."

The key slot in the gear I removed from my Harley SE2 cam does not exactly match up with the slot on the gear supplied with my new Andrews cam. Am I right in concluding that as long as I follow the above guidelines that it doesn't matter that the two key slots don't match EXACTLY?

Thanks for the help!

The key slot on the SE cam is MUCH narrower than the slot on the Andrews. The slot of the SE cam is on the edge of the Andrews slot, not in the center of the Andrews key slot as I would think. Do cam grinders grind the slot at EXACTKY 180 degrees opposite TDC or sort of where they want?

Thanks for the reply!

I also used this method to check the other method,

"You need to mark the cam gear EXACTLY 180 degrees from the cam/pinion mark (should be 20 teeth on both sides from top mark to bottom mark). The line you have marked ACCURATELY should be centered in the middle of the slot on the cam.Press away, and you're done.

Make any sense? I have a '93 EVO if it helps....
