+1 on the Hayden M6. If you have a grinding wheel handy this will help. There is one part that is a tad long by design that could prevent the outer case going on free of problems, test fit the case prior to final. This little issue is worth the effort.

When I did mine I had the same problem. When I loosened the nut it all dropped to the bottom. My fix and I haven't seen others here, was to use the extension on my socket and lift the adjuster up while still on the nut. I lifted it up to where I thought it would be good, checked it for slack and finally got it to where I wanted it. Kind of a pain but it worked. I will probably take off the whole cover next time.

Hmmmm I might not be doing it right... I reach in with left hand 2 fingers under where the bolt goes thru, then with right hand, ratchet short extension and deep 9/16'' socket I loosten the nut. then lift out-up and back in-up all at the same time... then tighten the nut back down. check deflection etc re-install the cover....
maybe I got long skinny incredibley strong fingers???

I gotta admit the removal of the entire cover is a lot easier tho.

I will be getting the auto adjuster.. Hayden M-6 soon.

Yes it's true that some grinding on the shims might be neccessary to allow the M-6 to seat properly on the bottom of the inside of the primary cover. I used a belt sander to shape the bottom shim so it fit just right.
Unc, I think that's what "old no. 7" was referring to.

I used to drink at a bar in Rosyln called "The Old #7"......... Hmmmmm.....
