One of our ad salesmen at American Iron Magazine recently showed up at work with his new (to him) 1200 Sportster. I think it's about 5 or 6 years old, very clean and low miles.
He said he paid $3,000 and rode it home. When I asked how he bought it so cheap, he said the seller was offered only $2,500 by the local Harley dealership.
Is this typical of Sportster prices? If so I am amazed at how little they sell for used.

That sounds more like an 883 price to me any idea if it had been in an accident or anything...I know Harley pricing has gone down dramaticly but $3,000 1200 sportsters the motor and drive train alone are worth that.
No. 2,500 sounds about right. They then try and sell it for 4,500. Never trade a bike in to the stealer unless its a last resort. You dont ever get what its worth.
There was a 1990 883 for $2790, 1995 1200 for $2500 and a 1999 Road King for $6200 not far from me. This is a buyers market. The prices of BT's are falling as well. The Jap bikes which have always lost value quickly are losing it faster now.

Considering that the only used bikes my local stealer has at the present time are a few 'Glides and Kings and that almost every other used bike he gets, especially Sportys, are sold within a few days of being traded in, I'm more inclined to think it's a seller's market.
My brother in Iowa was thinking about trading for a used Heritage Softail and his local stealer offered him $4500 for his '06 Sporty, sight unseen. That's within $50 of NADA Blue Book retail price for the bike. I assume they wouldn't be offering that much unless they thought they could sell it for more than retail. That sure makes me think it's a seller's market here.

It is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the LORD. ----Abraham Lincoln
