| | Why does my 1200 custom spit out of the carb. Always when its cold and sometimes when its warm.
The bike has Cycle shack exhaust and a screaming eagle hi-flo air filter, thats it!
This thing spits through the carb something fierce.
My first thought is its too lean. But I also think maybe advanced timing, although its never been opened up. It has had all required mantenance.
Its a 02' 1200 custom with 15,000 miles on it.
Any ideas on what I should do or check? I was thinking on bigger main jets as a beginning point. |

| | You definitely need some re-jetting there. Free flowing exhaust and A/C always leads to a leaner mixture on the carbed bikes. There're some sharp Sportster guys that roam this site. I'm sure they'll give you a good starting point for what jets and needle settings to use.
Good Luck |

| | pop,spit Welcome,
You are too lean. If the jets have not been changed you most likely have a 42 low speed and will need to incresae to a 45 or 48. One of the easiest improvements is to change the needle to a 27094-88. You will need to remove the plug on the bottom of the carb to expose the mixture screw. Most pops are cured with a 45 and the needle change. Less than $20.00 for everything.

| | Thanks Wrightturn... I'll assume that these can be purchased at an indy shop as opposed to paying H-D prices.
This is all on my wifes bike, and these will be the first steps in correcting the problem. You say needle and jet..... correct? |

| | pops,spits Hey Street Bob,
The needle is under $10.00 from the dealer. The jets are $6.00 from the dealer or $2.99 from J&P. The high speed is usualy ok as is. The needle change will richen things up across the entire range. After you uncover the mixture screw you need to turn the screw in VERY GENTLY until it bottoms out then back it out two and a half turns. Each motor can be different but this should get you very close with the mods you have.
Your wearher is a bit colder than mine and you may need one jet size higher in cold weather.

| | I am running with a #45 low speed Jet and a #180 high speed jet. The only time I start getting it to "Carb Fart" again is when it gets cold out. That is cured by me turning the screw on the low speed out about a 1/2 turn. |
